Tennis To Travel To Cleveland State This Sunday
February 07, 2020 | Women's Tennis
Cleveland, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program returns to the court this weekend after being off for a week. The Falcons will take to the road, facing Cleveland State on Sunday (Feb. 9) with a 1 p.m. first serve. The match will be the first of two consecutive road trips for the Orange and Brown. Bowling Green is coming off a 5-2 win over Youngstown State that opened up the home portion of their spring schedule. The win moved the Falcons early record to 1-1 on the season.Â
Last Time Out
Against Youngstown State on Jan. 24, the Falcons jumped out on top early, taking all three doubles matches, two by a 6-1 final and the third 6-4. The momentum spun into the singles matches as well for Bowling Green, winning in first, second, third and fourth singles to more than secure the victory. Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Ioanna Tsadari, Yulia Kapitanova and Ayumi Sasaki claimed both singles and doubles wins on the day in the Orange and Brown while Marta Bettinelli and Laura Silveira just missed singles wins, but were part of doubles wins on the day.Â
Colliding With Cleveland State
The Vikings are off to a hot start in the spring, being 3-0 thus far picking up a win at Western Michigan by a score of 4-3 followed by wins over John Carroll, 7-0, and St. Francis (Pa.), 6-1. Bowling Green will serve as the second opponent of the week for Cleveland State as they will first face Toledo, being played on Friday (Feb. 7). The quick start comes a year after the Vikings went 16-9 during the 2018-19 season, including being 9-1 at home, a campaign that saw them finish as the Horizon League runner-up, falling to UIC in the championship. Of the nine losses for Cleveland State last year, one came against Bowling Green. The Falcons bested the Vikings last year on Feb. 10 by a score of 4-3.Â
Checking The Record Book
Sasaki has a chance to move up the all-time singles win list this weekend. Currently in a three-way tie for 30th in program history with 47 singles wins, a win this weekend would move Sasaki into a tie for 29th all-time with Cameron Benjamin (2002-05) with 48 career singles wins. As for career doubles wins, Tavpash has the opportunity to jump from a five-way tie for ninth all-time with 73 career doubles wins to a three-way tie for seventh all-time with 74 doubles wins. Similarly, with two wins overall at stake this weekend, Tavpash could make a leap on the combined wins list as well. Currently with 125 combined career wins for 22nd all-time, Tavpash could move as high as 20th all-time if she can capture both wins.Â
