January 06, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BGSU improves to 4-0 in the MAC, 8-1 on the season
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team burst out of the starting gates quickly in each half Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 6), as the Falcons posted a 73-48 win at Western Michigan University.
The Falcons (8-1, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) had a lightning-quick start to each half. An early onslaught produced BGSUÂ leads of 17-2 and 21-4 in the first quarter, and after the Broncos narrowed the Falcons' lead to eight points at the half, another quick start in the third quarter put BG firmly in control once again.
Freshman Lexi Fleming, held scoreless in the first half, scored 11 points in that third period and finished with 16 for the game. Junior Kadie Hempfling tied Fleming for team honors with 16 points, and also had eight rebounds, while freshman Kenzie Lewis had 10 points and eight boards.
The Falcons forced 27 WMU turnovers, and BGSU had an advantage in points off turnovers for the ninth time in as many games this season.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• On the sixth day of January, the Falcons have surpassed the program's Mid-American Conference win total for all of last season. BGSU went 3-15 in conference play in 2019-20, and the 2020-21 Falcons now have a league record of 4-0.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a great team win. I loved our response to start the second half and our consistent defensive effort today."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons went scoreless on the first two offensive possessions of the day, but after a steal by freshman Lexi Fleming, classmate Nyla Hampton found a trailing Kadie Hempfling, and the junior's three-pointer gave the visitors a 3-0 lead. BG would never trail in Wednesday's win.
• Reilly Jacobson's layup got the Broncos on the board, but the Falcons then proceeded to go on a 14-0 run, holding Western without a point for exactly five minutes.
• Hempfling began that run with a driving layup, giving her five points, and Hampton then scored the game's next five points, taking a Fleming pass and hitting a three-pointer, then stealing the ball near midcourt and blowing past a Bronco defender for an open layup and a 10-2 lead.
• Hampton then would drive and dish the ball to freshman Kenzie Lewis, and Fleming found senior Madisen Parker for another three-pointer, prompting a Bronco timeout. Moments later, senior Angela Perry's foul-line jumper gave the Falcons a 17-2 lead.
• A nifty layup by Megan Wagner momentarily slowed the Falcons' surge, but Perry hit a pair of free throws, then hit a turnaround layup after an impressive touch pass from Hempfling. The BG lead was 21-4 before the Broncos made an 8-2 run over the final minute-plus of the opening period.
• Six different Falcons hit a field goal in the quarter, including senior Clare Glowniak, who backed her defender down into the paint and scored in that final minute.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Falcons struggled at the offensive end in the second quarter, scoring just six points, but BG allowed just nine points at the other end of the court.
• Glowniak hit a nice turnaround layup after a Hampton entry pass, and two minutes later, Perry's jumper gave BG a 27-14 lead.
• Jacobson, however, hit a three-pointer, and a driving layup by Taylor Williams cut the Falcons' lead to 10 and prompted a timeout.
• After Glowniak's layup at the 8:35 mark, the Falcons made just one of the next 11 shots. But, following the Williams layup, the Broncos didn't even attempt a shot from the field for the next three minutes. During that span, WMU had five turnovers and missed two free-throw tries.
• Hempfling had a shot blocked, but tracked down the rebound and hit a turnaround jumper from the foul line, but Jacobson's layup cut the BG lead to eight points, 29-21, at the half.
• The Falcons forced WMU into 17 turnovers in the first half, including 11 in the second quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
• BGSU outscored Western by a 25-9 count in the third quarter to take a 24-point lead after 30 minutes.
• Fleming went 0-for-7 from the field in the first half, but single-handedly outscored the Broncos in the third quarter. She took a Parker pass and knocked down a three-point try on the opening possession of the period. A Hampton steal led to Hempfling's layup on a 2-on-1 break, and the lead was 34-21 as Western used a timeout at the 8:50 mark.
• Lewis made the 'extra pass' to find Fleming open on the left side of the court, and Fleming's second three-ball of the quarter made it an 8-0 run and a 37-21 game. Then, Hampton's sweet pass resulted in a Parker triple and a 40-23 lead. When Hampton immediately stole the ball and again found Hempfling for a layup, BG's lead was 19 points, the largest of the game at that point.
• The Falcons' run was 13-2 to begin the quarter. After Sydney Shafer made a pair of free throws, Lewis hit a layup, and Hempfling knocked down a fadeaway three-point try for a 47-25 advantage at the 4:23 mark.
• Fleming stole the ball and scored, and Hampton's pass resulted in a reverse layup by Hempfling. BG's lead was 51-27 as Western used a timeout.
• WMU scored the game's next three points before Hempfling's cross-court pass resulted in a Fleming three-pointer that barely moved the net. After three periods, the Falcons led, 54-30.
• Fleming scored 11 points and Hempfling nine in the third period alone. BGSU was 10-of-18 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from the arc.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Fleming picked right up where she left off as the fourth quarter got underway, taking a pass from sophomore Olivia Trice and draining yet another three-point try. WMU scored the next four points, but Fleming outfought three WMU players to rebound her own miss, then laid the ball back up and in for a 59-34 lead.
• Jacobson recorded the game's next four points, cutting the BG lead to 21, but Lewis made a nice cut to the basket and was fouled as she took a pass. She hit each of the ensuing free-throw tries, and after Williams answered with a layup, Lewis knocked down another shot from the stripe, then hit the first three-pointer of her young career.
• The Falcons got a stop, and freshman Jasmine Clerkley's sweet step-through move resulted in a layup and her first collegiate points. BGSU led, 67-40, with just over four minutes to go, and Parker's layup gave the Falcons a 29-point lead, the largest of the game, less than a minute later.
• Redshirt freshman Macy Spielman made a pair of free throws with 1:22 to go, and redshirt sophomore Molly Dever closed the game's scoring with a layup after an impressive combined effort. The play began when freshman Sophie Dziekan went to the floor to grab a rebound, firing a pass to Clerkley as she hit the ground. Clerkley quickly whipped the ball to a cutting Dever for a short banker off glass.
