BG Falcon Hockey To Host Lake Superior State This Weekend
February 10, 2021 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No. 13 Bowling Green State University hockey team will look to get back on track this week against Lake Superior State after two losses to then No. 6 Minnesota State. The Lakers will be the third consecutive opponent for Bowling Green that has been at least receiving votes in the USCHO poll. The Falcons were able to sweep No. 18 Michigan Tech prior to facing Minnesota State. With just three WCHA series left on the regular season slate, the Falcons enter the weekend second in the conference with 16 WCHA points. As for Lake Superior State, they are currently in seventh with three points, but have only played four WCHA contests thus far.
Â
Looking Over The LakersÂ
Lake Superior State will enter the weekend holding a 7-4-3 record as well as a 1-3 standing within the WCHA. The Lakers most recently split a series against Northern Michigan this past weekend, seeing both games go into overtime. LSSU was able to score the overtime goal for the win on Saturday (Feb. 6) while that distinction belonged to Northern Michigan on Sunday (Feb. 7). Of the 14 games they've played, the Lakers have finished in a tie during three of them with another five being settled by just a single goal. Combined, that means that ties and one-goal games account for eight of the 14 games Lake Superior State has competed in this season. They've also lost by more than three goals just once this season, coming in a 6-2 loss to Minnesota State.Â
The Games At A GlanceÂ
The power play and penalty kill units of both the Falcons and Lakers could play a big role in the upcoming series. Beginning with the Bowling Green power play against the Lake Superior penalty kill, the Falcons could capitalize on opportunities. The Falcons have the 21st best power play in the country with a mark of .207 while the Lakers have the 14th best penalty kill at .844, making for an intriguing matchup should the Falcons be given the man advantage. On the flip, should the Lakers have the advantage, then the gap is a bit bigger. Bowling Green's penalty kill is about where their power play is, coming in at 27th in country at .797. However, the Lake Superior power play is 48th among 51 active teams in the country with just five power play goals on 59 chances so far this season. The gap has placed Lake Superior at 34th in the nation for combined special teams while the Falcons clock in at 37th with .480.Â
Seniors In The SpotlightÂ
This weekend the Falcons will recognize 10 seniors on the roster, being Carson Musser, Max Johnson, Gavin Gould, Justin Wells, Cameron Wright, Connor Ford, Sam Craggs, Brandon Kruse, Eric Dop and Brett Rich. Since this class arrived, the BG Falcon Hockey program has accumulated an 85-32-15 (.701) record entering the weekend, along with a 52-27-13 (636) WCHA standing. As a group, this senior class has put on the Orange and Brown a combined 996 times entering this weekend and have accounted for 207 goals and 335 assists to total 542 points. Additionally, in the net there have been 41 wins, 1,649 saves and six shutouts. The class has also already produced three 100-point scorers, nearing a fourth and also closing in on the program's first 100-assist player in the 21st century.Â
Closing In On The Record BookÂ
Both Brandon Kruse and Cameron Wright are closing in on adding their names to the BG Falcon Hockey record book. Kruse is currently at 97 assists, needing just three to become the team's first player to log 100 career assists since Kelly Perrault during the 1996-97 season and just the 21st all-time. As for Cameron Wright, he needs just six points to become the team's fourth active 100-point scorer, currently sitting at 94 points. If Wright reaches the mark it would be the first time since the 1996-97 season that the Falcons have at least four active players with 100 career points. In that season, Bowling Green rostered Curtis Fry (194 points), Mike Johnson (162), Kelly Perrault (148) and Brett Punchard (135). Wright would join Kruse, who has 134 points, as well as Max Johnson (114) and Connor Ford (108).Â
The Season Of SweepsÂ
Despite playing in just a total of 12 series so far in the 2020-21 campaign, the Falcons have already registered seven sweeps this season, matching the total from the entire 2019-20 season. If the Falcons can pick up just one more sweep it would be the most since the 1987-88 season that logged 10 sweeps. That team finished second in the CCHA and went on to win the CCHA Tournament while advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.Â
