SETTING THE SCENE – FIRST-PLACE FALCONS HOST DEFENDING MAC CHAMPS
• The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, currently sitting atop the Mid-American Conference standings, welcomes the defending regular-season champion to the Stroh Center this week. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face Central Michigan University on Wednesday (Feb. 17), with tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
• The Falcons have been involved in a one-point game on each of the last two Wednesday evenings. Most recently, BGSU posted an 80-79 overtime win at then first-place Kent State last week, with that win vaulting the Falcons past the Golden Flashes. Senior Angela Perry's offensive rebound and putback with 2.0 seconds left in OT gave BG the lead, and freshman Nyla Hampton blocked a KSU shot attempt as the final horn sounded to seal the win.
• The Falcons are in first place with an 11-3 league record, good for a 78.6% winning percentage. Three teams, however, including the Chippewas, have won over 70% of their MAC games, with no fewer than six teams – half of the conference – at 66.7% or better. Central, coming off of a double-digit win over KSU on Saturday, has had the MAC's best regular-season record in each of the last four seasons.
FOLLOW THE FALCONS
• Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, BGSU will unfortunately not have any public attendance for women's basketball games in the 2020-21 season. However, there are multiple ways to follow the Falcons this winter...
• TV/VIDEO: All of BGSU's home games, as well as many road contests, will be streamed via ESPN3 or ESPN+.
• RADIO/AUDIO: All BGSU home games and a few road games will have an audio stream thanks to the efforts of the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO).
• LIVE STATS: Live stats will be available for all BGSU games in 2020-21.
• TWITTER: In-game updates, along with key graphics and information, can be found on the BGSU women's basketball twitter account, @BGSUwbb.
Links to any and all ways to follow the Falcons will be available on the schedule page at BGSUFalcons.com on game day.
STEALING SOME WINS
• BGSU had 'only' seven steals at Kent State, snapping a streak of seven-straight games with 11 steals or more. Through 19 games this season, the Falcons have recorded double-digit steal totals no fewer than 13 times, more than doubling the total (five) for all of last year. BG has had 10 or more steals in seven of the last eight games and in 10 of the last 12 contests.
TURN THOSE TURNOVERS INTO POINTS
• The Falcons have been successful at not only creating opponent turnovers, but also in limiting their own turnovers this season to date. BG has had an advantage in points off turnovers in 18 of this season's 19 games.
• Heading into the CMU contest, the Falcons have scored a total of 403 points off turnovers (21.2 per game), compared to 212 (11.2 per game) for the opponents.
WORKING OVERTIME (AND TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS) (NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER)
• The win at Kent State marked the Falcons' first overtime game of the season, and the program's first OT contest since a 96-86 loss to the Flashes in double overtime at the Stroh late last season (Feb. 29, 2020).
• BGSU's victory was the Falcons' first OT win in over three years (since a 66-62 win at Robert Morris on Nov. 16, 2017) and the program's first overtime victory in a MAC game in more than nine years (since a 77-72 triumph at Central Michigan on Jan. 28, 2012).
• BGSU had lost five consecutive OT contests and seven of the last eight such games before the win at KSU.
The Falcons are now 27-26 in overtime games in program history, including a 19-9 mark in OT games on the road.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE CHIPPEWAS
• Central Michigan is 13-6 overall, and the Chippewas are 11-4 in MAC play. CMU has won three-straight games, including an 84-71 home victory over Kent State on Saturday (Feb. 13). Prior to that, CMU had played four consecutive games that were decided by four points or fewer.
• Micaela Kelly leads the team with 23.7 points per game, while Molly Davis is close behind at 20.5 ppg. That duo has combined to make 109 three-point field goals this year to date.
• The Chippewas are 6-3 at home and 7-3 on the road this season. In the MAC, CMU is 5-3 in Mount Pleasant and 6-1 away from home. Head coach Heather Oesterle welcomed back seven letterwinners, including all five starters, from a 2019-20 club that finished 23-7 overall and 16-2 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Central Michigan, 47-22, in the all-time series, but the Chippewas have captured the last six matchups. Last year's lone meeting saw CMU triumph, 82-75, at McGuirk Arena (Feb. 15, 2020). In the most recent meeting at the Stroh Center, Central won by a 92-54 score two years ago (Feb. 20, 2019).
• BGSU's last series win came on Feb. 19, 2014, a 67-55 victory in a battle of MAC divisional leaders at the Stroh. BGSU is 25-7 in home games, 18-11 on the road and 4-4 in neutral-site contests vs. the Chippewas over the years. Much more series information can be found on page 24 of the PDF version of these very notes.
