CMU Salvages Series Split with Sunday's 5-2 Win
March 21, 2021 | Softball
McCoy goes 2-for-3 with a double for the Falcons
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Central Michigan University scored five runs over the last three innings to pick up a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Sunday afternoon (March 21). With the win, the Chippewas salvaged a split of the teams' four-game weekend series at Meserve Field.
The Chippewas (4-9, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) broke a scoreless tie with a pair of fifth-inning runs. After the Falcons (10-9, 2-2 MAC) got a run back in the bottom of the inning, CMU scored twice more in the fifth to take a three-run lead.
Grace Lehto picked up the complete-game win for the visitors, while Shaidan Knapp had a two-run homer to break that scoreless draw.
For the Falcons, Madi McCoy capped a solid weekend at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
BGSU-CMU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored in the first four innings. BGSU's Payton Gottshall and CMU's Grace Lehto combined to allow a total of just five hits in that time.
• The Chippewas threatened in the top of the first, as Shaidan Knapp led off the game with a base hit, and Morgan Gardner singled with one out, advancing on the throw to put runners at second and third. But, Gottshall got a popup to second base, before center fielder Greta L'Esperance made a running catch on a fly ball by Michaleigh Vallimont.
• Madi McCoy singled with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Lehto then retired the next nine Falcons before Evelyn Loyola's two-out base hit in the fourth.
• Meanwhile, however, Gottshall surrendered just one more hit before the fifth. In that fifth frame, though, Kelsey Alexander led off with a single, then took second on a sacrifice bunt. Gottshall struck out the next batter, but Knapp followed with a two-run homer to right to put the Chippewas on the board.
• BGSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning, as Payton Hamm doubled with one out and scored on a Nikki Sorgi single with two down.
• In the sixth, though, a two-out, two-run single by Gisele Acuna gave the visitors a 4-1 lead. Again, the Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the frame. McCoy doubled with one down, and scored on a Maycee Godbolt single.
• But, after Knapp walked and wound up scoring on a Abbey Tolmie single in the seventh, Lehto was able to retire the Falcons in order in the bottom of the frame to close out the win.
STATS & LEADERS
• Lehto picked up the win with seven innings of two-run, six-hit ball. She threw 76 strikes among her 109 pitches, striking out nine without walking a batter.
• Gottshall took the loss, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings. Sydney Stepp gave up three runs (one earned) and three hits in her two innings of relief work.
• At the plate, McCoy led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. She was 8-for-12 at the plate in the four-game series.
• Loyola, Godbolt, Hamm and Sorgi all added hits for the home team.
• Knapp led the Chippewas, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a homer, two runs scored and two RBI. Alexander also had two hits in three trips.
