NOTE OF THE DAY
• Coming off of a 10-win season, the Falcons were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team Mid-American Conference race in 2020-21. BGSU proceeded to win 21 games and a MAC regular-season title, and the Falcons advanced to national postseason play for the first time in seven years.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Bulldogs took the lead with a layup right off of the opening tip, but Olivia Trice, making her first collegiate start, hit a three-pointer, and a Kenzie Lewis free throw gave the Brown and Orange a 4-2 lead.
• Elissa Brett's nifty pass resulted in a Kadie Hempfling layup, but a trailing three-pointer was followed by a transition layup to give the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage.
• Hampton pulled up for a jumper in the paint, but a pair of buckets inside gave DU a 14-8 advantage. When Maggie Bair hit a layup moments later, the Bulldogs had a 9-0 run and an 18-8 lead.
• After a nifty move, Clare Glowniak scored inside to end the run. Then, after a a Hampton free throw, Glowniak took a Trice pass and knocked down a jumper. Then, Brett's 'extra pass' resulted in a corner three by Madisen Parker, and the Falcons were back within two points after a quick 8-0 run.
• But, a putback by Monica Burich ended that run, and Grace Berg then made a three-pointer for a 23-16 Drake lead. Lewis, however, hit a shot at the stripe, and Hempfling stole the ball, drove downcourt and made an acrobatic spin-a-rama banker as the horn sounded, cutting BG's deficit to 23-19.
SECOND QUARTER
• Parker scored five-straight points for the Falcons, with a jumper followed by a three-pointer, and when Lewis made a Euro-step layup, BG had a 26-24 lead.
• A Hampton floater restored the Falcons' two-point lead moments later, but the Bulldogs scored the next five points, and after Hempfling found a cutting Macy Spielman for a layup, Sarah Beth Gueldner's second three-pointer in as many possessions gave DU a 34-30 lead.
• Parker answered with another triple, but a Berg layup began a 6-0 Drake run to end the half, and a pair of Berg charity tosses gave DU a 40-33 lead at the half.
• Parker scored 11 points in the opening half, going 4-for-4 from the field, including three shots from the arc.
THIRD QUARTER
• Drake hit a three-ball on the first possession, but Lewis grabbed a rebound and found Hampton for a contested layup in transition, and Hampton then knocked down a pair of free throws. A three-point play gave the Bulldogs a nine-point lead, before a Hampton steal resulted in a Hempfling runout that that made it a 46-39 game.
• Hampton hit a floater, and when Parker faked a three to get her defender in the air, then made a triple, BG was within five at 50-45. Brett drilled a short-corner jumper moments later, but a steal and layup by Maddie Monahan and a pair of Bair free throws made it a nine-point game once again.
• When Maggie Negaard hit a layup, the Bulldogs led by 10, before Glowniak's bucket in the waning seconds of the quarter cut BG's deficit to 58-50.
FOURTH QUARTER
• A Drake layup opened the fourth-period scoring, but Trice's three-point play got the Falcons within seven. But, after a few minutes of back-and-forth play, a Taylor McAulay layup restored DU's 10-point lead, and Courtney Becker then hit a corner three. BG trailed, 66-53, and the Falcons used a timeout with 6:09 to go.
• Out of that timeout, Hempfling drove and kicked the ball to Brett for a three-pointer, and after a Drake layup, Lewis made a pair of charity tosses. But, back-to-back layups gave the Bulldogs a 72-58 lead with four minutes to go.
• Brett hit a corner three, and the Australia native grabbed an offensive board and hit a reverse layup, but the Falcons could not cut into the DU lead.
• With 20.2 seconds to go, Glowniak made an and-one turnaround floater, and her free throw gave her 10 points on the afternoon/evening and capped the game's scoring.
