Furious Comeback Bid Falls Just Short as UB Prevails in OT
March 06, 2021 | Women's Basketball
Bulls escape the Stroh with 69-68 win on Senior Day; Top-seeded Falcons now eye Wednesday's MAC Tourney QF
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio  – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team made a furious second-half comeback Saturday afternoon (March 6), but the University at Buffalo was able to escape the Stroh Center with a 69-68 overtime victory. The Mid-American Conference game was the final regular-season contest for both teams.
Despite the loss, the Falcons (18-5, 14-4 MAC) end the regular season as the conference champions, and BGSU will be the number-one seed for the conference tournament, which begins Wednesday morning (March 10) in downtown Cleveland. BG will meet Eastern Michigan in quarterfinal-round action, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Junior Kadie Hempfling and sophomore Elissa Brett scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, for the Falcons on Saturday. That duo combined to score 36 of their 38 points after halftime.
With those 20 points, Hempfling tied her career high. She also scored 20 points in the Falcons' first meeting with UB this season.
The Bulls (14-8, 11-6 MAC) held BGSU to just 16 first-half points, and UB led by as many as 20 points on Saturday. But, the Falcons came roaring back.
BG still trailed by 14 as the fourth quarter began, but the Falcons made 7-of-8 shots from the field to begin the period, taking the lead on a Hempfling bucket with just over four minutes to go in regulation.
The lead changed hands several times after that, and there were four more changes in the overtime session. The outcome was not decided until a last-second shot by the Falcons hit the rim and bounced off.
Freshmen Lexi Fleming and Nyla Hampton had 13 and 10 points, respectively, to round out BG's double-digit scorers. For Buffalo, Keowa Walters had 18 points before fouling out, while Dyaisha Fair added 16.

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This is a disappointing loss, especially with it being Senior Day, but I think it's a very good learning moment for us, going into the tournament. I just thought our start was really bad. Our fourth quarter was outstanding, and I loved the way we fought back, but our start needs a lot of improvement. That will be a good learning point as we move forward and get ready for tournament time."
POSTGAME INTERVIEWS
FIRST QUARTER
• UB's Hanna Hall hit a three-pointer almost immediately after the ball was tipped on Saturday. It would prove to be the only trey the Bulls would make all afternoon, but it gave the visitors a lead they would maintain for nearly all of regulation.
• Lexi Fleming took a pass from fellow freshman Kenzie Lewis and drained a three-point try with just over a minute gone, and after both teams went scoreless for over two minutes, Fleming hit a floater to cut the UB lead to 7-5. But, Cheyenne McEvans answered with a bucket that began a quick 6-0 run for the Bulls.
• BG used a timeout after Dyaisha Fair came up with a steal and threw the ball ahead to McEvans for an uncontested layup and a 13-5 lead. Out of that timeout, Kadie Hempfling found Clare Glowniak for a shot off glass, but that hoop – with 5:12 on the clock – would prove to be the last time the Falcons would score in the quarter.
• While BG's offense was struggling to get started, the Falcon defense held the Bulls to just two points over the last 5:31 of the quarter, as a Keowa Walters jumper with 3:02 left in the period would prove to be the final points of the period.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Bulls went 4-for-4 from the field to begin the second quarter, and UB scored the first 10 points of the period to take a 25-7 lead. Walters and Fair hit jumpers, and Jazmine Young made a pair of layups before Fair converted two shots at the stripe.
• Elissa Brett fed Angela Perry for a layup in traffic, and Perry returned the favor with a pass to Brett for a bucket in the paint. But, the visitors would score the game's next six points, and Fair's layup in transition gave UB a 31-11 lead as the Falcons used another timeout.
• Nyla Hampton took a Hempfling pass and drilled a corner three, then drove and made a layup in the final minute of the half. But, the hosts trailed, 32-16, at the intermission.
• BG shot just 24.1 percent in the first 20 minutes, going 7-for-29. UB made 14-of-26 shots (53.8%) in the opening half.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons hit a few more shots in the third period, but could not cut into the Bulls' lead. Hempfling drove, spun and banked home a shot, and Perry made a turnaround shot after Fleming had grabbed two offensive boards to keep the possession alive.
• Fleming found a cutting Brett for a back-door layup, and after Walters scored at the other end, Brett made a pair of free throws to bring BG within 14, at 38-24. Moments later, Lewis fed Hampton for a three-pointer, but the Bulls extended the lead back out to 17 as Walters scored her team's next six points.
• Hempfling made another spinning backer, then hit a short-corner jumper, and Fleming drilled a triple try in the last minute of the period, but the Falcons still trailed by 14, 48-34, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling scored the first four points of the fourth period, but a Walters layup put the visitors back up by 12. But, Fleming made a pair of free throws, BG forced a shot-clock violation – one of approximately six by the UB offense on the day – and Hampton drove and kicked the ball to Fleming for a left-side three-ball. Suddenly, the margin was down to seven with just over seven minutes to go.
• McEvans answered with an and-one layup and hit the ensuing charity toss, but a Hempfling offensive rebound kept a possession alive, and Fleming found the junior for a straightaway trey, making it a 53-46 game with 6:16 to go.
• BG forced another shot-clock violation, and Hempfling drove and found a cutting Brett for a layup. After a Fleming steal, Brett was fouled in transition, and after a UB timeout, the sophomore's free throws cut the Bulls' lead to 53-50 with 5:13 on the clock.
• A Hempfling steal led to a Hampton layup, and after the Bulls turned the ball over again, Glowniak found Hempfling cutting to the hoop, with Hempfling's bucket capping an 11-0 run and giving BG a 54-53 lead with 4:04 remaining.
• Walters hit a putback to give UB the lead once again, and after a Hempfling three-point try was halfway down before rattling out, a BG offensive rebound led to a Brett free throw. The game was tied, 55-all, at the 3:28 mark.
• BG forced a miss, and Brett hit a driving layup. Fair found Walters for a bucket that tied the game with 2:26 to go, and after a Hempfling free throw, Summer Hemphill's bucket gave the visitors a one-point lead. Glowniak was fouled – the fifth foul for Walters – and the senior hit one of two free throws to tie the score with 1:36 left. Neither team would score again in regulation.
• Fair missed a shot for the Bulls, but a Hampton shot would not drop. Fair drove into traffic and threw the ball away with 13.0 seconds left. After a timeout, a Hempfling three-point try would not drop. Fleming grabbed the rebound in midair and laid it in, all in one motion, but the horn had already sounded and the teams went to overtime.
• BGSU shot 63.6% from the field in the fourth quarter, going 7-for-11 from the field, and the Falcons outscored the Bulls by a 25-11 count in the period.
OVERTIME
• Neither team scored on its first OT possession , but Hempfling made a driving layup just over 30 seconds into the period. After McEvans split a pair of shots at the stripe, another driving layup by Hempfling gave BG a 63-60 lead.
• The Bulls missed a shot, but BG turned the ball over inside, and Hemphill scored at the other end. BG missed a three-point try, and Fair was fouled on UB's next possession, sinking both shots to give the Bulls a 64-63 lead with 2:19 left.
• Fleming drove and found Brett for a corner three with 1:55 to go, and after Hemphill's Euro-step layup tied the score, Brett converted a layup for a 68-66 lead with 1:18 remaining.
•  McEvans was fouled with 58.5 seconds left, and made the first free-throw try, but missed the second. Fleming rebounded the miss, but a BG turnover led to a transition bucket by Fair with 26.9 seconds left.
• On the ensuing possession, a Fleming foul-line jumper was off the mark, but Brett battled a Bull for the rebound, with a jump ball called. The possession arrow favored the Falcons with 4.3 seconds to go.
• A Fleming three-point try looked to be on line, but hit the rim. Brett grabbed the rebound, but time had expired and the Bulls escaped with the one-point victory.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• Kadie Hempfling and Elissa Brett combined for just two points in the first half, but the duo combined for 27 points in the second half and all nine of BG's points in the overtime period.
• Hempfling was 8-for-12 from the field after halftime, while Brett went 5-for-6 from the floor during that time.
• On the day, BGSU shot 41.7% from the field, while UB shot 50.9%. The Bulls were 29-of-57, while BG went 25-of-60 from the floor.
• Buffalo, after hitting a three-pointer just seconds after the opening tipoff, finished 1-for-5 from the arc for the game. BGSU went 7-of-26 (26.9%), including a 4-for-8 effort in the third and fourth quarters combined.
• BGSU outrebounded the Bulls, 35-34, and the Falcons had a 20-18 advantage in points off turnovers. But, UB led in points in the paint (50-34), second-chance points (11-8), fast-break points (10-6) and bench scoring (25-7).
SENIOR DAY
• Saturday was Senior Day for the Falcons, with the team's four seniors recognized in ceremonies prior to the game.
