Gottshall fires a two-hitter in 2-1 win in Athens
ATHENS, Ohio – Payton Gottshall fired a complete-game two-hitter and Evelyn Loyola homered to lift the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 2-1 win at Ohio University on Sunday afternoon (April 18). The Mid-American Conference game was held at the Ohio Softball Field.
Gottshall allowed only an unearned run as the Falcons (17-18, 9-11 MAC) held a 5-2 advantage in the hits department on the day. The redshirt freshman walked three batters and struck out 11 in earning her 11th win of the season.
Loyola homered in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie, and after the Bobcats (14-15, 10-10 MAC) scored an unearned run in the fifth, BG answered in the top of the sixth as Greta L'Esperance scored all the way from first base on a bunt by Sammy Dees.
Gottshall set down the Bobcats in order in both the sixth and seventh innings, striking out the final two batters of the game to lock down the one-run win.

NOTEWORTHY
• BGSU had five hits compared to two for Ohio on Sunday. BGSU has had more hits than the opposition in nine of the last 10 games (and hits were even in the 10th contest).
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"It was great to see our program win a close game today against a top program in the MAC. Payton Gottshall showed better in this game, and worked through some adjustments after being off the last few weeks. I'm proud of the comeback and we're looking to continue to build from that performance."
"Offensively, power and speed helped our offense to secure the win. Evelyn Loyola came up big for us with the home run to put us on the board. She is the type of player that can change the game with one swing, and it was great to see. The short game proved to make a difference as well. Greta L'Esperance earned her way on, which gave Sammy Dees the opportunity to move her over, and L'Esperance did a great job of capitalizing on her opportunities to take the open bases."
BGSU-OHIO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons put a pair of runners on base in the first inning, as Greta L'Esperance led off with a bunt single and took third on Madi McCoy's one-out single up the middle. McCoy took second on a fly ball to shallow left, but another fly ball to shallow right got Ohio starter Mackensie Kohl out of the jam.
• BGSU starter Payton Gottshall walked three batters in the game, and all three came in the first inning. After issuing the third of those free passes with two outs, however, Gottshall got Caroline Spacek to hit an inning-ending fly ball to left.
• Neither team had another baserunner until Allie Englant singled up the middle to begin the Ohio third, but after Englant stole second, Gottshall struck out both Yasmine Logan and Katie Yun before getting Annalia Paoli to fly out to L'Esperance in center.
• In the fourth, Evelyn Loyola homered to left with two outs, putting the Falcons on the board. It was Loyola's third homer of the season.
• Gottshall retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bobcats tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth. Caitlin Fogue was hit by a pitch, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Rice and came around to score on an error after Englant's roller to the right side
• BG responded immediately, however, with a run in the sixth. L'Esperance led off with an infield single. Then, Sammy Dees laid down a bunt toward the right side, and Ohio first baseman Spacek fielded the ball and threw to second baseman Mikenzie Vaughn covering the bag.
• On the play, L'Esperance rounded second and, seeing third base uncovered, kept right on going. She slid into third without drawing a throw. However, both the Ohio third baseman and catcher had headed toward third, and L'Esperance got up, saw home plate uncovered, and took off once again. The Falcon runner slid into home, narrowly avoiding the tag effort from a lunging Vaughn who was charging toward the plate from the first-base area, and the Falcons had the lead.
• Gottshall worked a one-two-three sixth inning, then, after getting pinch-hitter Sophia Bernard to fly out to center in the seventh, struck out both Fogue and Rice to end the game.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• BGSU outhit Ohio, 5-2, with L'Esperance and McCoy each going 2-for-3.
• Loyola had the Falcons' other hit, the fourth-inning homer.
• Englant had both of Ohio's hits on the day. Gottshall struck out eight of the nine players in Ohio's starting lineup at least once, fanning three of them twice each.
• Gottshall walked three batters and struck out 11, and threw 70 of her 108 pitches for strikes.
• Kohl took the loss for Ohio, allowing two runs and five hits. She walked one and struck out three.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will wrap up a 10-game road swing with a Tuesday (April 20) doubleheader at Toledo. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
• Then, BGSU will be idle until Wednesday, April 28, when the Rockets come to  Meserve Field for a twinbill.
