BGSU captures opener, 5-3; second game halted in the fourth
TOLEDO, Ohio – Nikki Sorgi's two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 5-3 win over the University of Toledo on Tuesday afternoon (April 20). The game, the opener of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at a snowy Scott Park.
The second game was halted in the fourth inning due to deteriorating field conditions. The Rockets held a 6-1 lead in that contest, which will be completed on a date to be determined.
Madi McCoy and Sarah Gonzalez each had two hits for the Falcons (18-18, 10-11 MAC) in the opener, while Sophie Weber homered and Sorgi had the ninth-inning single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and two RBI, including the game-winning RBI.
In the nightcap, Gonzalez homered for BGSU's lone run through the first four innings.
The Rockets (19-12, 9-6 MAC) got three hits from Dayna Denner in the opener, while Leah Munson had a pair of hits in the contest.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"We played a tough first game against Toledo, and it was great to see our team pull through in the ninth inning. I am proud of our players for staying focused today. It isn't easy playing this game when it's snowing outside.
"Several players stepped up in the offense today and executed the short game so we could get runners in scoring position. Sorgi's single in the nth inning with heads-up base running allowed us to score two runs to provide some cushion. Â
Â
"Gottshall worked hard through those nine innings as the zone was extremely tight and required her to change the approach with certain pitches. Nonetheless, it was another strong outing by Gottshall and the defense."
BGSU-UT GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• There was no shortage of traffic on the basepaths on Tuesday. The Falcons and Rockets combined for 21 hits and 10 walks in the game.
• BGSU starter Payton Gottshall walked six batters, including two in the opening inning. But, a double-play ball and a runner caught stealing got the Falcons out of the inning unscathed.
• And, in the second inning, Sophie Weber hit a one-out homer to straightaway center of of UT hurler Erin Hunt to put the Falcons ahead, 1-0. Sarah Gonzalez singled and Sophie Bosket walked with two down, but Hunt got an inning-ending strikeout.
• Gottshall struck out the side in the bottom of the second, and had three more strikeouts – working around a pair of UT hits – in the third.
• UT loaded the bases in the fourth via two singles and a two-out walk, but Gottshall punched out Sydney McKeever with the bases loaded to end the inning.
• But, in the fifth, the Rockets broke through. A one-out walk and a two-out hit off the bat of Dayna Denner put two runners in scoring position, and both runners crossed the plate on Macey Moore's single up the middle.
• In the sixth, however, the Falcons responded as Nikki Sorgi singled and took second on Evelyn Loyola's sac bunt. Hunt got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but Peyton Dolejs came through with a single up the middle to plate Sorgi with the tying run. Dolejs took second on the throw home, and she continued on to third when that throw was off line. Then, Gonzalez followed with a double to right as Dolejs scored easily to give BGSU a 3-2 lead.
• Back came the Rockets, though, with a two-our rally in the bottom of the sixth. Anna Dixon reached on an infield single, and came around to score on Leah Munson's double.
• A Madi McCoy single in the top of the seventh and a Riley Mohr walk in the bottom of the inning were not enough to break the deadlock, and the teams headed to extra innings as it started to snow harder.
• Loyola singled to begin the eighth, and Weber's bunt moved pinch-runner Marlie McNulty to second, but a fly ball to shallow left and a strikeout ended the inning.
• In the bottom of the inning, McKeever reached on a swinging bunt single, and took second on a sac bunt, but Gottshall struck out Dixon before McKeever was cut down attempting to steal third.
• Payton Hamm led off the ninth inning with a pinch-hit double to shallow left, and Greta L'Esperance drew a walk. Sammy Dees bunted the runners to second and third, but Hunt got a popup back to the circle for the second out. But, Sorgi's blooper landed just inside the right-field line, out of the reach of diving second baseman Aleah Marra, as both Hamm and L'Esperance scored.
• In the bottom of the inning, the first two Rockets reached, and a sac bunt put the tying run on second base with just one out. Mohr followed with an ankle-high line drive that Gottshall grabbed for the second out, and the BG pitcher then got Marra to lift a fly ball to left. Makailah Dees made the grab in foul territory to give the Falcons the win.
BGSU-UT GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sorgi was hit by a pitch in the first inning, and Sammy Dees singled, but Hunt – starting her second game of the day – retired the next two hitters to end the half-inning.
• The Rockets batted around in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs via just one hit. Five walks and a hit batter helped lift the home team to that four-run lead.
• BGSU got on the board as Gonzalez led off the second with a homer. Dolejs followed with a single, but the Falcons could not narrow the deficit any further. BG got a pair of baserunners in both the third and fourth frames as well, but could not capitalize.
• In the UT third, an infield single, a walk, a wild pitch and another infield hit gave the Rockets another run, and Toledo scored again in the fourth. In the latter inning, after Jenna Kroll singled to drive home a run, the head coaches and umpires had a brief meeting, and the teams were called off of the field. The game was halted at that point, and the Falcons and Rockets will look to complete the contest at a date to be determined.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• Gottshall picked up the win for the Falcons, striking out 10 Rockets to move to 12-6 on the year.
• McCoy and Gonzalez each went 2-for-4, with Gonzalez driving in a run.
• Weber's homer was her second of the season, and Sorgi had a hit, a walk, a sac bunt and two RBI.
• Dolejs also had a hit and drove in a run, while Hamm was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
