McNulty, L'Esperance pick up three hits apiece
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a pair of Mid-American Conference games to Kent State University on Friday afternoon (April 23), falling by scores of 3-0 and 4-0 at Meserve Field.
The Falcons (18-20, 10-13 MAC) got a pair of complete-game performances in the circle, with Payton Gottshall pitching the first game and Hannah Davies the second. But, the Golden Flashes (15-18, 11-8 MAC) got two complete-game efforts as well, with Jessica LeBeau and Gabbie Sherman each throwing a shutout.
For the Falcons, Greta L'Esperance and Marlie McNulty each had three hits in the doubleheader. McNulty picked up the first hit of her young BGSU career in the opener, then had her first two-hit game as a Falcon in the nightcap.
BGSU-KSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU's Payton Gottshall and KSU's Jessica LeBeau fired matching zeroes in Friday's first contest until the Golden Flashes broke through with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
• The Flashes' Emily Lippe led off the fifth inning with a double to left, and pinch-runner Alex Fiske took third on a fly ball to center, then scored on a bouncer to the right side of the infield by Julia Mazanec.
• In the sixth, KSU's Brooklyn Whitt singled with two down, and Megan Turner then homered to left to give the visitors a three-run lead.
• Greta L'Esperance led off the BGSU first with a bunt single, and after she stole second, Nikki Sorgi drew a walk. But, LeBeau was able to retire the next three Falcons to escape the early jam.
• In the BG second, Peyton Dolejs led off by walking on four pitches – the second of four walks LeBeau would issue in the game – and Sarah Gonzalez bunted her to second. One out later, Marlie McNulty drew a base on balls, with Dolejs taking third when the ball-four pitch got away from the KSU catcher. L'Esperance reached on a grounder to the left side for the second time in as many at-bats, but Dolejs was forced to hold at third base on the play, but LeBeau got an inning-ending popup.
• Sophie Weber drew a third-inning walk and McNulty singled with two down in the fourth – McNulty's hit came after Payton Hamm ended an epic 13-pitch at-bat by hitting a scorcher that was caught in right field – but neither runner could advance past first.
• After McNulty's single, LeBeau retired the next 10 Falcons to close out the game.
• Gottshall had allowed just one hit through three innings, but Alexis Taube began the fourth by reaching second on a single and an error, and Taube took third on a grounder to put a runner in scoring position with just one out. But, Gottshall struck out Turner on three pitches, then got Sabrina Kerschner to hit a fly ball to left that McNulty caught in foul ground to end the inning.
• In the KSU seventh, Sammy Dees made a nifty defensive play, ranging far to her right to grab a ground ball and firing to Dolejs at second in time to get a force out. Gottshall then threw out the lead runner after a Mazanec bunt, and a ground ball to third ended that inning.Â
BGSU-KSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• KSU struck early in the second game, with three runs in the top of the first. Two slow rollers resulted in two baserunners, as Kennadie Goth led off the game with a single and Whitt reached on an error. A one-hopper back to pitcher Hannah Davies resulted in a force at third, but Turner doubled to right-center to plate both runners, and she then came around to score on Lippe's single.
• For the second-straight game, L'Esperance began the Falcon first with a bunt single, but a double play emptied the basepaths.
• Gonzalez singled in the third, after Logan Everett bunted her to second, McNulty beat out a roller up the middle to put runners at the corners. McNulty promptly stole second, but KSU pitcher Gabbie Sherman got a grounder to short, and shortstop Mazanec looked Gonzalez back to third before firing to first, and a strikeout ended the threat.
• KSU added a run in the fourth as Carlee Selle walked, and a sac bunt and a grounder to the right side moved pinch-runner Fiske to third. Goth lifted a soft liner just over the glove of a leaping Sammy Dees for a run-scoring single.
• In the Falcon fourth, Sorgi fouled off five-straight pitches as part of a 10-pitch at-bat. On the 10th pitch, she drove a ball over Whitt's head and to the wall in dead center for a one-out double.
• Sorgi took third on a Weber ground ball, and Dolejs lined a ball to right-center. The drive seemed ticketed for extra bases, but centerfielder Whitt made a diving catch to end the inning and keep the Falcons off of the scoreboard.
• In the sixth, Sammy Dees singled with two outs, and Sorgi was hit by a pitch, but Sherman got an inning-ending strikeout. Then, in the seventh, the KSU hurler worked out of trouble after allowing hits by Dolejs and McNulty, preserving the shutout.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• Each team got two complete-game pitching performances on Friday. LeBeau allowed three hits, walking four and striking out 10 in her opening-game win for the Flashes.

• In the second game, Sherman scattered seven hits, striking out four without walking a batter.
• Davies allowed just two earned runs in the game, giving up eight hits and walking four while striking out two.
• Both L'Esperance and McNulty, as mentioned, had three hits apiece on Friday, with L'Esperance picking up two in the opener and McNulty two in the nightcap.
• McNulty reached base twice in each contest, with a walk in addition to the hit in Friday's first game.
• Lippe and Taube each went 2-for-3 for KSU in the opener, with Turner hitting a two-run homer.
• In game two, Goth was 3-for-3 with a walk, as five other Flashes picked up one hit apiece. Turner had two RBI for the second-straight game.
