Third-Quarter Run Lifts Zips Past Falcons, 79-69
January 08, 2022 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio – A 9-0 run by the University of Akron broke a third-quarter tie and lifted the Zips to a 79-69 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Jan. 8). The Mid-American Conference matchup was held at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Jordyn Dawson paced four double-digit scorers for the Zips (5-4, 2-1 MAC), with 26 points. Dawson wound up with a triple-double, with 13 rebounds and 10 assists in the win.
For the Falcons (6-6, 1-2 MAC), Nyla Hampton had 15 points, while Elissa Brett scored 14 points and tied for team honors with six rebounds.
Kadie Hempfling added 11 points, with Amy Velasco scoring nine and Morgan Sharps seven.
The Zips led for most of the afternoon, but after trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Falcons came all the way back, tying the contest just over halfway through the third quarter.
Madisen Parker's three-pointer made it a 49-49 game, but the Zips proceeded to score the next nine points, and the hosts kept that lead between nine and 11 points for most of the fourth quarter.
Layne Ferrell scored all six of her points during that 9-0 UA run.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a tough one today. We've got to get back to work and get better."
FIRST QUARTER
• The game was tied three times in the opening period, including twice in the first few minutes. The teams traded points, with Nyla Hampton hitting a layup (after a nifty Kadie Hempfling pass) and a pull-up jumper.
• UA took a four-point lead before Elissa Brett knocked down a three-pointer, but after Lonasia Brewer's second-straight hoop, Jordyn Dawson hit a triple to give the Zips a 13-7 lead.
• Jocelyn Tate took a Brett pass and hit a layup, but BGSU still trailed by six points midway through the quarter before making a run. Tate returned the favor, assisting Brett for a short-corner jumper, and a three-point play by Morgan Sharps gave the Falcons the lead with 2:19 left in the quarter.
• Sharps was fouled on a defensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws, and Brett was fouled on a drive, draining both of her charity tosses. Dawson snapped the Falcons' 9-0 run with a layup, then hit a jumper with half a minute to go, giving the Zips a 19-18 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Hempfling hit a three-ball on BGSU's first possession of the period, but UA's Rachel Martindale answered with a pair of long-range shots. Zoe Miller's free throw cut UA's lead to three points, but after a Zip free throw, layups by Dawson and Reagan Bass gave the hosts a 30-22 lead.
• Sophie Dziekan took a Kenzie Lewis pass and scored, but Annika Corcoran's four-point play gave the Zips a 10-point advantage with 3:49 left in the half.
• Lewis hit a pair of shots from the line, and after a Brewer triple, Lewis found Hampton for a corner three. Then, Hempfling's driving layup made it a 37-31 game.
• But, Corcoran connected from the arc, giving UA a nine-point lead. After the teams traded free throws, Brett hit a late triple to cut the Zips' lead to 42-36 at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Trailing by eight after an early hoop, Hempfling hit a driving layup, then knocked down a three-point try. Moments later, an Amy Velasco layup cut the lead to three once again, before Corcoran answered with a triple.
• But, Miller hit a free throw, and Sharps grabbed a long rebound and took it to the other end for a layup. Out of the media timeout, Madisen Parker's three-pointer tied the game, 49-49.
• Dawson, however, answered with a jumper that gave UA the lead for good. The Zips got to the line twice in the next few minutes, splitting the shots at the stripe both times, and Layne Ferrell then hit a three-point try. A Ferrell layup in the final minute of the quarter made it a 58-49 game, and the hosts still led by nine after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Velasco made a pair of buckets in the first three-plus minutes of the quarter, but BG could not cut the deficit to fewer than nine points, as the Zips seemed to have an answer for each Falcon score.
• Tate came up with a steal in the UA end and fed a cutting Hampton for a layup midway through the period, and Velasco sank a pair of free-throw tries at the 4:12 mark.Â
• A Tate layup with 2:44 to go made it a 71-62 game, but BG would draw no closer. UT went 4-for-4 at the line over the next two possessions, and despite a Brett free throw, six Hampton points and a Velasco layup, the lead stayed between 10 and 12 points for the remainder of the afternoon.
