BGSU beats EIU before falling to Seattle
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University softball team scored twice in each of the first two innings in Saturday's (Feb. 12) opener, posting a 5-3 win over Eastern Illinois at the DePaul Dome Tournament.
On Saturday evening, the Falcons fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing by a 10-1 count to Seattle.
Reagan Williamson had two hits and three RBI in the opener, while both Greta L'Esperance and Peyton Dolejs scored a pair of runs vs. EIU. Dolejs, like Williamson, went 2-for-3 in the win.
Payton Gottshall picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the young season, while Kiara Hurley fired two shutout innings to pick up her first save as a Falcon.
BGSU-EIU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU broke on top early vs. the Panthers, with two runs in the bottom of the first. Peyton Dolejs doubled with one out, and Lexi Carver reached on an error to put two runners in scoring position. Then, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reagan Williamson scored Dolejs, and Bailey Sample doubled to plate Carver.
• Hannah Cravens homered to lead off the second inning, and the next batter reached on an infield single, but Payton Gottshall set down the next three Panthers.
• The home half of the second saw the Falcons mount a two-out rally. Greta L'Esperance walked on four pitches, and Dolejs then walked after a five-pitch appearance. EIU made a pitching change, but Carver greeted reliever Tieghan Morio by drawing another walk to load the bases. Then, Williamson singled to center, with L'Esperance and Dolejs coming around to score and give the Falcons a 4-1 lead.
• EIU scored a run in the fifth, when after a BG error, Riley Dittmar doubled to score Katie Nicholson. In the bottom of the inning, the Falcons were retired in order for the first time in the 2022 season.
• And, in the sixth, Cravens led off the inning with her second homer of the game. Kiara Hurley entered the circle, and after allowing a base hit, retired the next three batters.
• In the bottom of the inning, BGSU got that run back as L'Esperance singled, promptly stole second and came home on a Dolejs base hit.
• The seventh inning saw EIU get a pair of one-out runners on an error and a base hit, but Hurley worked out of the jam to secure a Falcon win.
