BGVB Tops Ohio To Tally Coach Tomic's 200th Win With Bowling Green

Jaden Walz Records Fifth Double-Double
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team topped the Ohio Bobcats in a 3-1 final on Saturday (Oct. 14) in Athens, Ohio to get back into the win column. The victory marked the 200th in Head Coach Danijela Tomic's career at the helm of the Falcons. BGSU took the first and second sets before Ohio forced a fourth with a third set win. Bowling Green was dominant in the fourth set, registering a .321 hitting percentage and a 25-13 set score to secure the win.
Jaden Walz paced the Falcons with her fifth double-double of the season, recording 41 assists and 10 digs for the Orange and Brown. Lauryn Hovey led the attack with 19 kills followed closely by Mia Tyler (12) and Kat Mandly (11) with Mandly adding a team-high four aces. On the defensive side, Helen Wilford registered a career-high eight block assists for the Falcons.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 18
- The Falcons registered a 4-1 start to the match, tallying two pairs of points split by one Bobcat tally. Trailing 4-1 early, Ohio took the first timeout of the match.
- Out of the timeout, OU worked their way back into the set with a 4-1 stretch of their own, tying the score up at 5-5, but Bowling Green logged a 3-0 run soon after to reclaim the lead at 9-6.
- Ohio stayed within a few points, but back-to-back BGSU points pushed the advantage to 15-12 Bowling Green with Ohio taking their second timeout of the set.
- Coming out of the timeout, the Bobcats recorded a 3-0 run to tie the match up once again, this time at 15-15.
- The Falcons were able to work back in front before a 6-0 run closed out the first set in favor of the Falcons, 25-18, to give BGSU the 1-0 match lead.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 23
- Ohio opened the set second with four straight points for a 4-0 lead, forcing the first Bowling Green timeout of the day.
- The Falcons responded out of the timeout with a 3-0 run to work the Ohio lead down to just one at 4-3.
- The Orange and Brown continued to chip away at the Bobcat lead, tying the match up at 6-6 with a 6-2 stretch after falling behind 4-0 to start the set.
- From there, the two teams began a run of ties, being knotted up at 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and 11-11.
- The Falcons were able to spell a 4-0 run to end the run of ties and take a 15-11 lead and prompt an Ohio timeout.
- Ohio drew within one, chipping away to a 17-16 score, but another 3-0 run pushed the Falcons' lead back to 20-16.
- The Bobcats narrowed the lead once again, bringing the score to 22-21 BGSU with a Bowling Green timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Lauryn Hovey landed her 12th kill of the match to force Ohio to take a timeout after just one point with BGSU leading 23-21.
- The Falcons were able to hold off the Bobcats push to take the second set and move in front 2-0 for the match.
Set 3: Ohio 25, Bowling Green 17
- The third set began close between the two teams before a 3-0 run pushed Ohio out in front 7-5, including an overturned call on a challenge.
- Another 3-0 run for Ohio later in the set extended their lead to 14-10 with the Falcons taking a timeout.
- The run continued through the timeout for the Bobcats, stretching to 6-0 with the score at 17-10.
- The Falcons started to chip away at the lead, tallying a pair of points to trim the score to 21-16 and force an Ohio timeout.
- Ohio closed out the set with a 3-0 run to force a fourth set.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 13
- Ohio landed the first point of the fourth set, but the Falcons responded with a 6-0 run to move out in front 6-1 and force an Ohio timeout.
- The Bobcats landed the first point out of the timeout, but Bowling Green answered with two of their own to extend their advantage to 8-2.
- The Orange and Brown put together another 3-0 run to push their lead to 11-3 and prompt the second Ohio timeout of the set.
- Out of the timeout, Ohio recorded a 3-0 run of their own to trim the BGSU lead down to 11-6.
- The Bobcats tallied a 4-0 run later in the set to close the gap to 15-11 BGSU, forcing a timeout by the Falcons.
- The Falcons answered out of the timeout with a 3-0 run, coming from two kills by Hovey and a block solo from her as well to push the BGSU lead to 18-11.
- After the OU points, BGSU put together another 3-0 run, making it a 6-1 stretch, to bring the advantage to 21-12.
- Bowling Green was able to register a 3-0 run to close out the set and take the match 3-1.

- With the win, Head Coach Danijela Tomic tallied her 200th win at the helm of the Falcons with 130 of those 200 coming in conference play. At the Division I level, Tomic now has 359 career wins.
- Alex Laboy recorded a team-high 13 digs for the Falcons, bringing her career total to 510 in the Orange and Brown, surpassing the 500-dig mark for her collegiate career.
- Jaden Walz finished with a team-high 41 assists for the Falcons to go along with 10 digs, finishing second on the team. The outing marks Walz's fifth double-double of the season and her third 40-assist match of the season after recording 43 against Northern Illinois and 41 in the first match against Ohio as well.
- Helen Wilford tallied a career-high eight block assists for the Falcons, the highest mark by a Falcon since Gwen Crull tallied five against Northern Illinois.
- Kat Mandly landed a team-high and career-high four aces in the match for Bowling Green. She added her first solo block of the season while landing 11 kills and maintaining a .300 hitting percentage.
- For the second consecutive match, Mia Tyler recorded a hitting percentage north of .300, finishing at .333 with 12 kills.
- Lauryn Hovey matched her season-high for kills with a team-high 19 while also attempting a season-high 44 attacks. Hovey added seven digs to her stat line as well as a solo block and four block assists.
- The win marks the first four-set win for the Falcons on the road this season.
- With the win, the Falcons have now won 10 of the last 12 meetings against Ohio and hold a record of 31-23 when playing in Athens.
- The win marks the first in the month of October this year for the Falcons.
