Falcons To Meet Miami (OH) In Midweek MAC Match

OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will conclude their three-match road trip with their first midweek MACtion match of the season. BGSU will be back on the road, this time facing Miami (OH) for a Tuesday test (Oct. 17). The Falcons and RedHawks are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve at Millett Hall.
Ready For The RedHawks
The Miami (OH) RedHawks will head into the week with a 5-15 standing on the season while being 1-7 within the Mid-American Conference. Miami tallied their first conference win this past weekend, splitting a series with Kent State with the RedHawks claiming the Saturday match by a score of 3-1. The win over the Golden Flashes snapped an eight-match losing streak for the RedHawks with their last win coming against Purdue Fort Wayne on Sept. 15. Miami (OH) started the season strong with 3-0 wins over Alcorn State and Memphis. They also added a 3-2 win over Illinois State.
Scouting Miami (OH)
The RedHawks are led on both sides of the ball by sophomore outside hitter Ellie Hanson. Hanson leads Miami (OH) in both kills (209) and digs (215) as the only player with 200 or more of either stat. Freshman outsider hitter Chelsea Williams follows in both stats with 187 kills and 110 digs. As a team, the RedHawks are allowing their opponent to hit .260 on the season and .284 during MAC play, coming in last in the conference.
All-Time Against The RedHawks
Entering this weekend, the Falcons and RedHawks have faced 91 times previously. Miami (OH) holds the all-time advantage with a record of 51-40, but the Falcons have been strong in the recent meetings. Bowling Green has won the last eight over Miami, as well as 11 of the last 12. The Falcons have also won the last two matches in Oxford, including a 3-0 win last season.
Falcons On The Defense
So far this season there has been a trend between the attack percentage of BGSU's opponents and the results of the match. When the Falcons are able to hold their opponent to an attack percentage of .200 or below, BGSU holds a record of 7-1. However, when the opposing team's attack percentage moves north of .200 for the match the Falcons are 1-10 this season.
Blocking Green
The Falcons continued a strong stretch at the net this season. Helen Wilford led the BGSU blocking efforts, logging 10 block assists over the two matches, including a career-high eight in the win over Ohio. On the season, BGSU is one of three teams with multiple players in the Top 10 of the MAC rankings for blocks per set, joined by Northern Illinois and Ball State. Jessica Andrews is sixth with a mark of 0.90 blocks per set while Alexis Mettille is ninth at 0.88.
Pair Of Aces
Lauryn Hovey and Kat Mandly are both inside the Top 10 within the MAC for service aces per set. Hovey is currently sixth with a mark of 0.41 while Mandly comes in ninth at 0.37 following a five-ace weekend against Ohio. BGSU and Buffalo are the only teams with multiple players inside the Top 10. The Falcons as a whole have landed 130 aces this season, which is tied for 47th in the nation.
