Falcons Close Non-Conference Competition Before Beginning MAC Play

BGSU travels to Michigan for Saturday match with Oakland, then hosts NIU for league opener
PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons (6-5, 0-0 MAC) conclude non-conference competition and open the 2023 Mid-American Conference Slate this weekend with matches against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (3-8, 0-0 Horizon) and the Northern Illinois Huskies (9-8, 0-0 MAC). The Falcons travel to Michigan for their match with the Golden Grizzlies, which starts at 4:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 18. The next day (March 19), BGSU returns to the Perrysburg Tennis Center to begin MAC play against the Huskies. That match will start at 1 p.m. and live stats will be available HERE.
Last Time Out: Falcons Extend Win Streak to Five in Florida
The Falcons won both matches during their spring break trip, defeating Ave Maria and Providence to extend their win streak to five matches. On March 6, Bowling Green took a 4-3 win over Ave Maria, with all four points coming in singles matches. Ioanna Tsadari, Lucy Furness, and Leticia Fonseca each won in two sets, then Eloise Saraty came from behind to win in three sets and clinch the win for the Orange and Brown. Tsadari and Saraty were also victorious in doubles, which was their fourth straight win.
The next morning, the Falcons took a 5-2 win over Providence, sweeping the doubles round and winning four more singles matches. Tsadari and Saraty extended their doubles win streak to five wins, then Tsadari won her second singles match of the week. Also earning her second straight singles win was Lucy Furness, then Maru Poppe took a singles triumph that marked her 25th career win. Leticia Fonseca also won in singles, her fifth consecutive victory. Tsadari, who had a combined 4-0 record, was named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week. BGSU's current five-match win streak matches the program's longest since 2013.
Opponent Outlook
Oakland enters the weekend with a 3-8 overall record, with five of their losses coming to MAC opponents. They have notched 7-0 wins over Bethune-Cookman and UMary, as well as a 5-2 victory over Seton Hall. Liza Mladentseva paces the Golden Grizzlies with an 8-3 singles record, playing all matches at No. 1. In doubles, Jillian Milano and Tegan Heaton have a team-best 5-1 record, playing all matches at No. 2 or No. 3. This is Oakland's final match of March, with their Horizon League opener slated for April 1 against Chicago State.
Northern Illinois has a 9-8 record, including wins in five of their last seven matches. After opening the spring with three road losses, the Huskies bounced back with a pair of home wins. On Feb. 17-18, NIU won three consecutive home contests by a score of 7-0, defeating Bradley, Western Illinois, and Cardinal Stritch. This is NIU's first action since March 4, a 6-1 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater. Nataly Ninova has a team-best 15-2 singles record, playing in spots No. 3-5. At No. 1, Erika Dimitriev boasts a 7-2 record. Ninova and Reagan Welch pace the Huskies in doubles, totaling an 8-5 record at No. 1-2.

Two days later, the Falcons won their MAC opener against NIU, 4-3.
