Reid, Hutter each go 2-for-2 in nightcap
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Miami University captured a pair of games against the Bowling Green State University softball team on Wednesday (April 12), sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 13-0 and 8-0 at Meserve Field.
Hannah Davies gave the Falcons a solid start in Wednesday's second game, while both Wynnie Reid and Katie Hutter were 2-for-2 at the plate. The RedHawks (23-14, 11-6 Mid-American Conference) outhit the Falcons (8-27, 1-14 MAC) by a narrow 7-6 count in the second game of the day.
That second contest saw the RedHawks score an unearned run in the first inning, before Davies retired 10 consecutive batters. She allowed only two hits through the first four innings, before the visitors put a big fifth inning together on the third time through the batting order.
The opening game saw MU All-American Karli Spaid stake her team to an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning, before the RedHawks exploded for a nine-run third. The latter frame saw Miami score all nine runs with two outs, as nine consecutive batters reached safely.
Brianna Pratt started all three games in the series for the RedHawks, allowing one hit in three innings in Wednesday's opener before giving up three hits in four innings in the nightcap.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The RedHawks took an early lead on a walk, a bloop single and a three-run homer by Karli Spaid in the top of the first inning.
• BGSU put a pair of runners at the corners in the bottom of the frame, as Delaney Davis led off with a walk before Sophie Weber reached on a one-out error. But, MU starter Brianna Pratt retired the next two hitters.
• An error and a walk gave the RedHawks runners at the corners with one down in the top of the second, but BG starter Sydney Stepp got a popup to second and an inning-ending fly ball to left.
• In the third, however, the RedHawks exploded for nine runs, all with two out.Jenna Golembiewski hit a two-run homer, while Maddi Banks had a double and Holly Blaska and Riley Coyne each singled. Miami drew a total of six walks against three BG pitchers in the inning, and Golembiewski had a two-run single to drive home the final two runs of the frame.
• Allie Cummins capped the game's scoring with a solo homer in the fourth.
• The Falcons got a Davis single in the third, but Pratt and reliever Taylor Turner combined to retire the final eight BG hitters.
• Davis was 1-for-1 with a walk in the five-inning contest.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The second game saw Pratt and BGSU's Hannah Davies nearly match each other pitch for pitch over the first four innings. The only run during that time came in the top of the first.
• Cummins began the game with a walk, and Blaska's fly ball to shallow left landed just out of reach of a diving Mikailah Dees for a single. Davies struck out Spaid, but Chloe Parks reached on an error to load the bases. Coyne lifted a ball to the right side of the infield, and an infield fly was called. Coyne was out, but the wind-blown ball landed between first and second and bounced toward the grass just beyond first base, allowing all three runners to advance.
• Davies got Kate Kobayashi to hit an inning-ending fly ball to center, then set down the RedHawks in order in both the second and third innings. Second baseman Ashley Chevalier aided the cause with a spectacular diving stop of a hot shot by Blaska in the third, going to her right to grab the ball before firing to Ally Bezjak in time to get the runner.
• The fourth inning saw Kobayashi reach on a two-out walk, ending Davies' streak of 10-straight batters retired. A Golembiewski base hit put runners at first and third, but Davies got Adriana Barlow to hit a grounder to Sophie Weber at third, with Weber's throw to first ending the threat.
• The Falcons got a Wynnie Reid single and a Weber walk in the first inning, but could not score. Katie Hutter and Reid each had hits in the third, but a grounder to short ended that threat.
• Miami broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five times. The inning included singles by Blaska, Spaid and Barlow along with four walks.
• BG got a two-out single from Hutter in the bottom of the fifth, but nothing more.
• In the sixth, the RedHawks plated two more runs. The bottom of the inning saw Maycee Godbolt reach on a wind-blown double. Turner, on in relief, got the next two Falcons to ground out to short, with Godbolt forced to hold. Peyton Dolejs had a two-out infield single that put runners at the corners, but another ground ball to short ended the contest.
