FINAL RESULTS
BUFFALO, N.Y. – First-year BGSU head coach Tanner Barton and his staff had a lot to be happy about.
The grueling, four-day marathon of the MAC Swimming & Diving Championships at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium concluded with a sixth-place finish for the Falcons, as the team tallied 254.5 points.
Both were Bowling Green's best in three years.
"I'm extremely proud of how this team performed, not only during our time in Buffalo, but throughout the entire season," Barton said. "These ladies had fun on deck and trusted in the training. Our improvement at this year's championship isn't going unnoticed."
Ava Vial led the way for the Falcons all weekend long and became one of the fastest swimmers in recent BGSU history. The graduate student's curtain call moment came during the 200 breaststroke, as she placed third with a time of 2:15.25 all the way in Lane No. 8.
It was the fourth-fastest mark in program history and fastest since Kristin Filby's 2:14.68 in 2015.
"Ava finished her BGSU career on such a high note," Barton said about the second-team All-MAC performer. "She has a drive like no other and she executed her race strategy just like we talked about. I couldn't be happier for her to come home with MAC hardware."
Grace Perlberg also had another historic performance in the event. The sophomore tied for 11th with Akron's Claire Cox in a time of 2:16.13, which is the seventh quickest in BGSU history.
The Falcons were well represented in the 200 butterfly with two A finalists and one B finalist. Karina Solera and Grace Bodrock took sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 2:01.89 and 2:03.03. Solera's mark is the seventh best in BGSU history.
Fabiana D'Ambrogio also took 11th in a time of 2:03.94.
Emily McNicol represented Bowling Green in the 200 backstroke, as she swam a 2:03.09 which was good enough for 16th.
Lourdes Manderfield also scored points in the 1,650 freestyle with a 13th-place mark of 17:23.64.
The quartet of Taylor Devorace, Samia Becdach, Elayna Krupp and Riley McNichols ended the evening with a time of 3:28.16 in the 400 freestyle relay to place eighth.
As for the divers, Natalia Mayorga, Elise Snyder and Evie Long all competed in the B final of the 3-meter event. Mayorga took ninth, which won her the B final, with a score of 284.20 that would have placed second in the A final. Elise Snyder (259.45) was right behind in 10th, while Evie Long ended in 13th (242.45).
Despite being picked to finish last in the conference preseason poll, the Falcons bested Eastern Michigan (215) and Toledo (175.5).
