Schmitz, who was the primary hitting coach for the squad, helped the Falcons earn two All-MAC First Team selections in shortstop Ryan Shay and third baseman Derek Spencer, as the Falcons led the conference in hitting with a .321 average. Under his guidance, Shay would finish the season with a school-record .412 average, which led the MAC and ranked 22nd in the nation. BG also set a new school-record twice during the season for most home runs in a game, hitting eight in a contest on two occasions.
In his one-year as an assistant coach at Longwood in the spring of 2007, Schmitz helped the Division I Independent program to a 34-19 record. That spring, the Lancers batted .313, which placed them 32nd on the national list. The Lancers collected 137 total extra-base hits and in drove in 277 total runs.

The younger Schmitz, was a four-year second baseman and designated hitter for the Falcons. In 2002, he was named the team[apos]s Most Improved Player as he helped BG capture the MAC Championship for the second-straight season. He was also selected to the All-MAC Academic Team in 2001.
