
Women's Basketball Falls To Auburn, 94-61

AUBURN, Ala. - Nationally-ranked Auburn University scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back, en route to a 94-61 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Nov. 25). The game was the championship contest of AU's Kroger Classic at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers, ranked 18th and 20th, respectively, in the ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press polls, took a commanding 53-14 lead into halftime. BGSU made just three shots from the field in the first half.
The Falcons outscored AU by a 47-41 margin in the second half, however, and had a 16-0 run late in the contest. The Brown and Orange, now 2-2 on the year, held Auburn without a field goal from the 6:19 mark until just 4.4 seconds remained in the contest.
For the Brown and Orange, junior Francine Miller and sophomore Megan Jerome tied for team honors with 18 points each. Both players scored 16 points in the second half, and Jerome was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, including a 3-for-3 effort from three-point land. She also hit all seven of her free-throw attempts.
For Jerome, the point total doubled her previous career high of nine, set on two occasions last season.
Sophomore Kim Griech had nine points off the bench, going 3-of-4 from behind the arc. BGSU made nine three-pointers in 20 attempts on the day.
Miller led the Falcons with seven rebounds, while freshman point guard Lindsay Austin had five assists and three steals to lead the team and tie for game honors in each category.
Tasha Hamilton and Carol Smith each had 16 points for Auburn, which improved to 4-0 on the season.
AU shot .446 from the field to the Falcons' .380. BGSU made 16-of-33 shots in the second half (.485). The hosts held a 48-31 rebounding margin in the game.
Miller was named to the all-tournament team, along with AU's Hamilton (the MVP), LaRita Spencer and Lori Nero. Charleston Southern's Marta Losonczy and IUPUI's Angie Watt rounded out the team.
The Falcons are now idle until Saturday's (Dec. 2) home game against the University of Detroit Mercy. The contest, the first half of a women's/men's basketball doubleheader, will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
