BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior co-captain Melissa Lewis (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) earned the Player-of-the-Year Award at Sunday's (April 16) Bowling Green State University volleyball team banquet, held at the Bowling Green Country Club. Lewis, who earned All-Mid-American Conference First-Team honors last fall, also was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year.
Senior Lori Kemerer (Antwerp, Ohio) was named the Falcons' Defensive Player of the Year, while senior co-captain Heather Greig (West Bloomfield, Mich./Marian) earned the Outstanding Competitor Award. Sophomore Caty Rommeck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II/Oakland University) grabbed both the Most Improved Player Award and the Rookie-of-the-Year Award, while senior Kris Pesorda (Wellington, Ohio/Keystone) and sophomore Chris Shepherd (Northwood, Ohio) each won the Coaches' Award.
Three players -- Greig, redshirt junior Krista Davis (Hamilton, Ontario/Sir Allan MacNab) and freshman Laura Twyman (Sugar Land, Texas/S.F. Austin) -- won Academic Awards after each of the three student-athletes earned a perfect 4.00 grade-point average for the fall semester. Sophomore Karen Tangeman (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) was named the Most Improved Player for the BGSU spring season, which concluded Saturday (April 15).
The Falcons concluded the 1999 season with a 21-12 overall record, and BGSU finished with a 12-6 MAC slate. BGSU loses four seniors -- Greig, Kemerer, Lewis and Pesorda -- off that team, which advanced to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament.
