SERIES HISTORY
Bowling Green trails in the all-time series versus Rensselaer with a 6-7-0 record. BG is 5-1 at home against the Engineers including a weekend sweep (3-2, 6-4) on Oct. 27-28, 1995. Falcon head coach Buddy Powers is 2-1 against his former school. RPI assistant coach John Burke was a goaltender for BG from 1987-1991.
PREVIEWING RENSSELAER
The Engineers went 1-1 at home this past weekend falling to Clarkson (3-2) on Friday, but rebounding for a 6-4 win over St. Lawrence.
RPI is led in scoring by junior forward Matt Murley (15-14--29, 5 PPG), sophomore forward Carson Butterwick (8-16--24), sophomore forward Nolan Graham (10-12--22) and junior defenseman Jim Vickers (5-14--19). UNO is averaging 4.06 goals per game, while allowing 2.67 gpg.
Seventh-year head coach Dan Fridgen has primarily used freshmen Nathan Marsters (8-5-0, 2.47, .915) and Kevin Kurk (3-1-1, 3.01, .886) between the pipes. RPI's power play has scored on 23 of 111 opportunities (20.7%), while the penalty killing has stopped 83 of its opponents 103 chances (80.6%).
REVIEWING THE NEBRASKA OMAHA SERIES
Bowling Green suffered back-to-back 3-2 setbacks at Nebraska Omaha last weekend.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead 5:54 into Friday's contest on a goal by Jason White. White's fourth of the year was assisted by Dave Noel-Bernier and Jason Cupp.
BG scored the equalizer with 2:04 remaining in the opening stanza when Scott Hewson's power-play shot hit a defenseman's skate and went over the shoulder of UNO netminder Dan Ellis. Hewson's fourth of the campaign was assisted by Ryan Murphy and D'Arcy McConvey.
UNO grabbed a 2-1 advantage at the 6:33 mark of the middle period when Billy Pugliese tallied his third of the season from David Brisson and Andrew Wong.
The Falcons rallied again to tie the game at two just 1:21 after Pugliese's goal. Mark Wires netted his fourth of the year with Roger Leonard and Marc Barlow garnering assists.
The Mavericks' game-winner came with just 33 seconds left in the middle stanza as Andrew Wong scored during a UNO power play. Wong's fifth of the year was assisted by Brisson and Greg Zanon.
BG sophomore goalie Tyler Masters made 30 saves including 14 in the second period. UNO's Dan Ellis was credited with 23 saves including 10 in the final period. His best save came with less than a minute remaining in regulation when he gloved a Greg Day shot after BG had pulled Masters for an extra skater. Each team went one-for-seven with the man-advantage.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead 9:43 into Saturday's contest on a goal by Jason Jaworski. Jaworski's first collegiate goal was assisted by Jason White.
BG scored the equalizer with 1:26 remaining in the opening stanza when Greg Day scored from just outside the crease during a Falcon power-play. Day's team-leading 15th goal was assisted by Marc Barlow and D'Arcy McConvey. Barlow extended his assist streak to four games with his "helper" on BG's first goal.
The Falcons took their first lead of the weekend with 2:17 left in the middle period as Ryan Murphy scored a four-on-three power-play goal. Murphy's 12th of the campaign was assisted by Day and McConvey.
BG goalie Tyler Masters stopped all 16 Maverick shots in the second period.
UNO's David Brisson scored a four-on-four goal 3:46 into the third period and scored the game-winner with 1:26 left in regulation. Andrew Wong assisted on both third period Maverick goals.
Masters turned aside 37 UNO shots, while Maverick netminder Dan Ellis was credited with 18 saves. BG scored on two of its seven power-play chances, while stopping all six Nebraska Omaha man-advantage opportunities.
THE LAST TIME
Rensselaer defeated BG 3-2 in the first round of the 1999 HSBC Holiday Hockey Tournament in Troy, NY.
BG's Scott Hewson and RPI's Brad Tapper each scored five-on-five goals in the first period. Engineer Jared Reigstad and Falcon Ryan Murphy each recorded second period power-play goals. RPI's Doug Shepherd scored the game-winner 4:06 into the third period.
BG's Shawn Timm made 30 saves, while RPI's Joel Laing was credited with 45 saves including 19 in the third period.
FALCON TIDBITS
BG completed its second six-game road trip of the season with a 3-3 mark. The Falcons went 1-3-2 during November's six-game swing with all three losses coming by one goal.
The Falcons have played 12 of their last 16 games away from the BGSU Ice Arena and have travelled 11,500 miles with trips to Northern Michigan, Ohio State, Alaska Fairbanks, Mercyhurst/Niagara, Princeton and Nebraska Omaha during the two six-game road trips.
Ryan Murphy has scored eight goals in the last eight games after his power-play goal on Saturday.
Greg Day recorded his eighth multiple-point game of the season with a goal and an assist on Saturday.
After scoring the first goal once in the first 10 games, BG has taken the early lead in six of the last 12 contests. The Falcons are 4-1-2 when scoring first.
The Falcons have now scored a power-play goal in seven consecutive games. BG is 11 for 42 (26.2%) with the man-advantage during this streak.
BG has an 0-6 mark in games decided by one goal this season and a 6-8-3 record when allowing three goals or less. BG's penalty killing units have stopped 24 of its opponents last 26 power-play chances (92.3%) dating back to the Niagara contest. The Falcons killed off a two-man advantage for a full two minutes at UNO on Saturday and were also successful during a five-on-three for 1:46 midway through the third period on Jan. 6 at Princeton.
Tyler Masters was credited with seven saves during the last 1:34 of Saturday's second period at UNO during the Mavericks five-on-three power play.
Masters has not allowed more than three goals in any of his last 11 appearances. During the span he has lowered his goals-against average from 2.93 to 2.70.
Scott Hewson extended his career-best point streak to six games by recording two assists on Friday and one on Saturday. Hewson has one goal and nine assists for 10 points during his streak. He also has a plus/minus rating of +9 in the six games. His 14 points this year better his previous high of 13 set last season. Hewson and Louis Mass are tied for the team lead in +/- at +5.
Ryan Murphy had his career-best six-game goal streak stopped Friday at UNO, but extended his point streak to eight games with an assist on Friday and a goal on Saturday. After scoring four times in his first 12 games this year, Murphy has eight lamp-lighters in the last eight contests.
Only six players have seen action in all 20 contests this year with BG's losing 37 man-games to injuries.
Bowling Green is averaging 25.36 shots on goal per game, while allowing 33.23 shots per contest.
The Falcons have outscored their opponents 22-19 in the third period this season.
