BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Corie Van Korngut's goal in overtime lifted Kent State University to a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team. The Mid-American Conference match was held Friday (Oct. 26) at a frigid Cochrane Field.
The loss was a heartbreaking end to the home season for the Falcons, who fall to 7-8-2 overall and 2-7-1 in MAC action. KSU is now 5-10-0 overall and 4-7 in the MAC.
The BGSU loss, coupled with other outcomes around the MAC Friday, eliminated the Falcons from contention for the eight-team league tournament. The complete results from Friday's action, as well as updated standings, can be found below.
On a day which saw Cochrane Field battered by strong winds and a rain/snow mix, the teams battled through two halves of scoreless soccer, with neither team able to mount many scoring chances. KSU capitalized in the OT session, however, scoring on the first shot attempt of the period.
The Golden Flashes brought the ball down the left side of the field, with Bethany Sanker and Lauren Caminati working a give-and-go play. Caminati returned the ball to Sanker, who was moving toward the BGSU goalmouth. Falcon goalkeeper Erika Flanders was forced to commit to Sanker, who slid a ball across the six-yard box. Van Korngut, a sophomore, was the first player to reach the cross, and placed the ball into the open net for her first career goal.
With the loss, the Falcons finish the home portion of the season with a 4-4-1 record. BGSU has won four matches at Cochrane Field in four of the team's five seasons. The Falcons are now 2-5-2 in home overtime matches, with three of those losses coming in the final match of the regular season.
The Golden Flashes outshot the home team by a 14-8 margin, and KSU had nine shots on goal to the Falcons' four. Flanders, bidding for her school-record fifth shutout of the season, made eight saves to set a new single-season record in that category. The junior now has 123 saves this year, breaking her own record of 118.
Kent State 'keeper Lindsey Mitchell made four stops to earn a shutout win. KSU had the only two corner kicks of the match, both in the first half, and the visitors had 18 fouls to the host school's 14.
BGSU will head to Oxford for a Sunday (Oct. 28) match at Miami University, with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m. Then, BG will end the season with a Thursday (Nov. 1) contest at Ball State University.
