BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Andy Richards and his assistant, Ashlee Orr, have announced the addition of seven student-athletes -- all Ohio natives -- to the program. Jenny Berlovan (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Kristy Coppes (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), Katie Piening (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Nikki Pucillo (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Beth Rieman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley), Jessica Sadler (Avon Lake, Ohio/Westlake) and Ali Shingler (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) will join the Falcons this fall.
The list of signees includes two forwards (Coppes and Piening), three midfielders (Pucillo, Rieman and Sadler), a midfielder/defender (Berlovan) and a goalkeeper (Shingler).
To follow are comments from coach Richards on each of the seven signees:
JENNY BERLOVAN: "Jenny comes to BGSU from the very successful Strongsville High School program coached by former Falcon men's player Jon Felton. She is a very competitive player who will be equally comfortable in defense as in the midfield. The Falcon program is extremely fortunate to sign a player of Jenny's caliber and the coaching staff welcome her as a huge asset to BGSU."
KRISTY COPPES: "Kristy made a huge impact as a freely scoring striker during her career at Findlay High School. The coaching staff are thrilled to sign such an exciting player who is also a product of the local area. Her high school coach, Kevin Veroneau, recommended Kristy to BGSU and is as confident as the Falcon coaches are in her ability to score goals at the collegiate level."
KATIE PIENING: "Katie is a striker from the Club Ohio program and Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati who is sure to make an impact in the offensive third of the field. Katie is extremely athletic and causes problems for opposition defenses through her speed and knack for creating scoring opportunities. The Falcon coaching staff are excited that Katie's addition to the roster will add much to the BGSU's offensive threat for next season and beyond."
NIKKI PUCILLO: "Another product of Coach Jon Felton's Strongsville High School program, Nikki will add guile and creativity to the Falcon midfield. She is effective in both wide and central positions and will also get forward into goal-scoring areas. The coaching staff is delighted to add Nikki to the roster and anticipates a bright future for her in college soccer."
BETH RIEMAN: "Beth was a highly recruited athlete due to her strength, composure and ability to read the game. The Falcon coaching staff were ecstatic to sign Beth after facing stiff competition from a fellow MAC program for her commitment. A graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, Beth is expected to fill a defensive midfield role."
JESSICA SADLER: "Jessica moved to Ohio after playing high school and club soccer in Phoenix, Ariz., and Omaha, Neb. BGSU coaches recognize Jessica as a real student of the game who will contribute as an attacking midfield player or striker. A graduate of Westlake High School, and the widely-renowned Internationals club program, Jessica has participated in both the Nebraska and Ohio ODP programs."
ALI SHINGLER: "A goalkeeper for the Ohio Premier club team, Ali joins BGSU after a stellar career at Grove City High School. Ali was a two time first-team all-conference pick and a conference scholar athlete. The Falcon coaching staff are extremely pleased to add a goalkeeper of such high quality and expect her to add strength and depth to the program."
The Falcons posted an overall record of 10-10-1 in 2000, Richards' inaugural season, and had a MAC mark of 5-5-1. BGSU, seeded seventh for the MAC Tournament, advanced all the way to the championship match before dropping a 1-0 double-overtime decision to Miami University. The Falcons lose seven seniors off that 2000 squad.
