Falcons Prepare For MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's track and field team will head to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for the 2003 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend. The meet, hosted by Central Michigan University, will run from Thursday through Saturday (May 15-17) at the Chippewas' Bennett Track. Thursday's first event is scheduled to begin at noon, while Friday's action kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday's first event is set for 11:00 a.m.

The following is an event-by-event preview of the Falcons...
Throws
Senior Mary Willems should be the top Falcon performer in the hammer throw. She placed fifth in the hammer throw in the 2002 MAC Outdoor Championships. Willems also set a school record in the weight throw at the 2003 MAC Indoor Championships with a mark of 62' 8.75".
Junior Kerri McClung will lead the way for the Brown and Orange in the shot put. She placed first at the 2003 MAC Indoor Championships in the shot put with a mark of 49' 3". McClung has yet to place in her first two years at the Outdoor MAC Championships.
Sprints and Hurdles
The Falcons will be led by junior Alicia Taylor. Taylor placed third in the 60-meter hurdles at the Indoor Championships with a time of 8.62 seconds and eighth in the 60-meter dash. She also owns the top three times in the 100-meter hurdles for the Falcons this season, her best coming at the All-Ohio Championships with a time of 13.87.
Taylor will also be a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400-meter relay squad, both which set new personal-bests at the Butler Twilight (May 3). The relay squad in the 4 x 100 ran a 47.03 and the 4 x 400 ran a 3:49.48.
Last weekend, the two teams bettered those performances, as each quartet notched season-best times at the Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturady (May 10). The 400-meter relay team consisting of sophomore Valerie Holland, junior Amy Henry, Taylor, and sophomore Amber Walker finished third in a school-record time of 46.56. The 1600-meter relay team took home first place with a season-best time of 3:38.73. The group consists of Taylor, junior Ellen Alkire, sophomore Marquita McGowan, and Walker.
Distance
Sophomore Amber Culp posted a regional qualifying time of 10:56.62 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the All-Ohio Championships back on April 12. Culp placed eighth at the 2002 MAC Outdoor Championships as a freshman with a time of 11:18.68.
