OXFORD, Ohio - A three-goal first half was more than enough for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2), as the Falcons posted a 3-1 win over Miami University. The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Miami Soccer Field.
With the win, the Falcons even both the overall and MAC records. BG is now 6-6-0 on the season and 2-2 in league action. The RedHawks drop to 4-5-0 and 2-2, respectively.
Senior Britt Anderson opened the scoring with a goal midway through the first half, and freshman Corbie Yee had the first two-goal match of her collegiate career, boosting the Falcons' lead to three goals at the intermission.
The RedHawks had two scoring chances, approximately 30 seconds apart, with only three minutes gone. But, Falcon goalkeeper Ali Shingler made diving saves to keep Miami's Lindy Slinger, then Jennifer Rush, from putting the hosts on the board.
Anderson got the Falcons on the board at the 22:16 mark, taking a touch pass from senior Samantha Meister and scoring her fifth goal of the season. Just under 10 minutes later, off of a quick restart, senior Julie Trundle's free kick found Yee, who gave the Brown and Orange a two-goal margin.
Just two minutes before halftime, Yee struck again. This time, it was Anderson's free kick that put the freshman in, and her shot beat MU starter Leigh Terry for the Falcons' third goal.
Miami spoiled the Falcons' shutout bid with just 3:50 left in the second half, as Kathleen Vistica headed home a free kick from Aimee Prevallet. But, MU would get no closer.
"I am delighted with the result today," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "It was a very necessary win in order for us to keep in contention in the MAC standings.
"We had an explosive first half, where we were very efficient in front of the goal. We didn't have a tremendous amount of chances, but when they came along, we took full advantage of them.
"We got great goals from Britt and Corbie, and it was exciting to see Corbie Yee make her mark on the team and in the conference.
"It was a bit disappointing to let a goal in so late in the match, but that was really the only down point. Ali Shingler made two extremely good saves early on, that gave us a good starting point, and we played progressively better from there.
"It was an excellent first-half performance, and an acceptable second-half performance, but most importantly, we got a MAC road win and the three points."
The Falcons held an 11-9 margin in shot attempts, including a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Anderson had a team-high four shots, while Yee had three. Both players had two shots on goal.
Vistica had six of MU's nine attempts and three of the RedHawks' five shots on goal.
Shingler picked up the win with a complete-match, four-save effort. Terry made two saves in 45 minutes of action, allowing all three goals. Shannon Chew, who has alternated halves with Terry all season, worked a scoreless second half, making one save.
The win concluded a five-match road swing for the Falcons, who return home for the next four contests. BGSU will play at Cochrane Field twice next weekend as part of soccer doubleheaders with the Falcon men's team.
The Brown and Orange will host Ohio University on Friday (Oct. 7) at 4:00 p.m., following the BG men's match vs. Northern Illinois at 1:00 p.m.
