CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, successful on the field, has been just as successful in the classroom. Six Falcon student-athletes, the most among any Mid-American Conference school, have been named to the Academic All-MAC Team, the league office announced Thursday (Nov. 10). Seniors Molly Bremen, Leah Eggleton, Samantha Meister, Ali Shingler and Julie Trundle, along with sophomore Janie Babich, all represented BGSU on the team.
The Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer team is the result of voting by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 28 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport of 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Bowling Green, as mentioned, had six student-athletes selected to the team, most of any league institution. The Falcons, coming off the 2005 MAC regular-season and tournament championships, will face Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA College Cup Friday (Nov. 11).
Kent State had four student-athletes honored. Ashley Bohinc, Alicia Fernandez, Lisa Kurz and Amanda Messer represented the Golden Flashes. This is the second consecutive year that Messer has been named to the Academic All-MAC team.
Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Toledo each had three Academic All-MAC selections. BSU's Amy Holst, Lindsay Wiltshire and Alison Becker represented the Cardinals, while Michelle Lawrence, Sara Schiffbauer and Trisha Roberts were selected from the Eagles. Holst and Wiltshire were both named Academic All-MAC in 2004, while Lawrence was named first-team All-MAC this season. The Rockets were represented by Jennifer Whipple, Nicole Williams and 2005 first-team All-MAC selection Kelly Langenbeck.
Anna-Lesa Calvert and Natalia Crofut represented Buffalo, while Tiffany Horvath and Larissa Najjar were selected from Ohio. This marks the second time in as many years that Calvert and Horvath have been named to the Academic All-MAC squad. Western Michigan also had two selections in Kate Perz and Chelsea McNally. McNally was named to the Academic All-MAC team last season as well.
Akron's Krystin Wilson, Miami's Kathleen Vistica and Central Michigan's Jacquie Lacek rounded out the Academic All-MAC selections. Lacek was named to the team last year and was a second-team All-MAC selection this season. Vistica received first-team All-MAC honors this year.
Wilson and Shingler led a group of five student-athletes who maintained a 4.00 grade point average. Schiffbauer, Kurz and Messer also sustained a 4.00 GPA.
The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
