Blacksburg, Virginia - Four Radford players scored in double figures and BGSU could not duplicate the success it enjoyed on Saturday against Virginia Tech as the Highlanders captured an 81-63 victory over the Falcons on the final day of the NABC Classic in Blacksburg, Virginia.
"They were more athletic on defense," said BGSU Coach Dan Dakich. "Their big guys killed us in the first half and in the second half our guards fell apart on defense."
Senior Whit Holcomb-Faye led all scorers with 27 points and junior Chris Oliver had 18 points as Radford broke open a close game in the second half.
The Falcons led 10-6 with 16:05 left in the first half and 17-14 with 10:11 thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Falcon junior Martin Samarco who finished with 17 points to lead BGSU.
The Highlanders took the lead for good at 21-19 on a jumper by junior Reggie McIntyre with 7:58 left in the first half. Radford built the first half lead to seven but a basket by senior Mawel Soler just before halftime made it a 36-33 game just before intermission.
"Their switching defenses (from zone to man-to-man) slowed us down in the first half," said Dakich. "They had the maturity and toughness to make that work. They didn't make any mistakes."
The Falcons, who played in foul trouble for the third straight game, kept it close and trailed 55-51 with 9:35 remaining when freshman Erik Marschall nailed a jumper. Marschall finished with 14 points.
From that point on, Radford took control of the game.
"We are going to spend the next week on not fouling," Dakich added. "I thought we had taken care of that, but I guess not."
The Falcons open the home portion of their schedule next Saturday at 2 p.m., when they host Urbana.
