BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over visiting Tiffin University in exhibition action Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 23) at BGSU's Cochrane Field. The match marked the Falcons' lone exhibition of the 2005 season.
Sophomore Tiernay Tilford opened the scoring, and freshman Kristin McDonald and soph Karie Sahly each found the back of the net before halftime. TU's Emily Goldsberry scored the lone marker for the visitors in the second half.
The Falcons, who outshot the Dragons by a decisive 38-6 margin, got on the board at the 13:20 mark. Senior Julie Trundle's through-ball found Tilford, who beat her defender, took a few dribbles and blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
McDonald's unassisted goal at 31:32 doubled the lead. Seemingly out of nowhere, the freshman fired a shot from the 18-yard line. TU goalkeeper Jennifer Rosselit was able to get her fingertips on the ball, but could not keep it from rolling into the lower left corner.
Just before halftime, Sahly, a sophomore transfer wearing the BGSU uniform for the first time, headed home a corner kick from senior Megan Rapp, and the Falcons had a three-goal edge.
Goldsberry scored the lone goal of the second half, off of a goalmouth scramble, with Rachel Garofolo assisting.
BGSU held a 16-4 margin in shots on goal. Senior Ali Shingler played the first half in goal, and was called upon to make one save in her shutout effort. Freshman Christy Zabek played the second half and made two stops.
Rosselit made a total of 12 saves for the visitors, while Abby Grieser played the final 11:45 between the posts, making one save.
"It was great to get our season started, and to have an opportunity to use some things that we have been working on in preseason in a game situation," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We saw some very encouraging signs out there today.
"We were able to give everyone who is fit and healthy a chance to play, and were very happy with the overall performance."
Indeed, both teams used the scrimmage as a chance to give many different people an opportunity to see time on the field. BGSU used a total of 20 players, while Tiffin played no fewer than 24.
The Falcons now prepare for this weekend's season-opening homestand. BGSU begins the regular season Friday (Aug. 26), hosting Oakland University in a 5:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field. On Sunday (Aug. 28), the Brown and Orange will host Wright State University, in a match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
