BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Visiting Oakland University broke open a tie game with three second-half goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Aug. 26). The match, the regular-season opener for both teams, was held at Cochrane Field.
Senior Samantha Meister opened the scoring for BGSU, but the Golden Grizzlies equalized before halftime on a goal by Marianne Samdal. Samdal's second goal of the match, less than six minutes into the second half, gave the visitors the lead for good.
Kristi Vandeberghe and Kristi Swaving each scored goals for OU, while Jessica Howard picked up the win in goal.
The Grizzlies nearly took the lead just four minutes into the match, but a soft shot by Jill Horan on a 3-on-1 break trickled off the post.
The Falcons' first shot of the match also was the team's first goal of the season. Meister received a pass from sophomore Danielle Cygan on the left side of the field, took a few dribbles and neatly placed a shot over Howard. The ball nestled into the net, just under the crossbar and the hosts had the lead at the 14:08 mark.
BG had a scoring opportunity approximately 28 minutes into the match, as Meister's pass found freshman Kristin McDonald behind the defense. McDonald, however, was pulled down from behind on the play. It was ruled that she was fouled just outside of the penalty box, and a free kick by senior Julie Trundle rolled just wide of the far post.
The visitors equalized with just under 14 minutes remaining in the half, on a seemingly harmless play. Neither team had possession of the ball when it deflected to Samdal, who was a step behind the Falcon defenders. Samdal took the ball into the penalty area and fired a shot over goalkeeper Ali Shingler and into the net.
Oakland had a scoring chance waved off due to an offsides call late in the first half. Samdal took a pass and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the net, but had been behind the BG defenders when the pass was made. The goal was nullified, and the score remained tied.
Oakland was whistled for seven offsides violations on the day, but the goal that proved to be the match-winning tally came when an offsides trap did not work. Early in the second half, OU's Kristi Mitchell blooped a ball over the mass of humanity in front of her. The ball landed at the feet of an unmarked Samdal, who was all alone with only Shingler to beat. The Falcon goalie had no chance to cut down the angle, and Samdal was able to convert her chance to give the visitors the lead for good.
Less than 10 minutes later, OU struck again, as a through-ball by Kristi Evans sent Kristi Vandeberghe in alone on Shingler. The Falcon goalie was forced to come out of her net in an attempt to contest the shot, but Vandeberghe was able to get to the ball a split-second ahead of Shingler, poking the ball into the net.
Swaving added some insurance at the 77:36 mark for the Grizzlies, who outshot the Falcons by a 20-7 count. Oakland had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal, with Howard forced to make just one save in goal.
Shingler made seven stops for the Brown and Orange.
"It was a very disappointing performance today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "As a team, we let ourselves down, particularly in the areas of mental concentration and teamwork. We failed to transfer what we have been practicing for the last two weeks onto the game field, and we are all very disappointed in the way we performed.
"Credit should go to Ali Shingler for an outstanding performance today. Without her, the score would have been a lot worse."
The Falcons will look to bounce back on Sunday (Aug. 28), as BG completes a two-match homestand with a contest vs. Wright State University. Kickoff for that match is set for 1:00 p.m.
