BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Britt Anderson recorded the first two-goal match of her collegiate career, pacing a balanced attack as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted a 6-0 win over Cleveland State University Friday afternoon (Sept. 16). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 4-3-0 on the season, and BGSU has won four of the last five matches after beginning the year with a pair of losses. The Vikings drop to 0-6-0 on the year.
BGSU, the MAC's highest-scoring team a year ago, set a season best in goals, matching the team's total from the year's first six matches combined.
Freshman Corbie Yee scored her first collegiate goal, while junior Lindsay Carter, freshman Kristin McDonald and senior Samantha Meister all found the back of the net for the home team.
Senior co-captain Ashley Wentzel picked up a pair of assists, while classmates Meister and Julie Trundle and sophomore Tiernay Tilford each had one assist on the afternoon.
For Trundle, the assist was the 26th of her Falcon career, setting a new school record in that category.
Anderson got the scoring started with just 3:17 elapsed. After a Cleveland State foul just outside the penalty area, the senior took a free kick, and blasted the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the goal, just out of the reach of leaping CSU goalkeeper Erin Withrow.
The Falcons held that one-goal lead until the 26:12 mark, when Trundle's corner kick found the head of Yee. The freshman's header hit the netting just under the crossbar.
Just over two minutes later, the hosts struck again. Neither team could gain possession as a series of seemingly purposeless kicks sent the ball toward the CSU end of the field. A Viking defender kicked the ball straight up into the air, and Meister, in the center of the field just a few yards off the CSU end-line, headed the ball toward the right, to a wide-open Carter. The junior settled the ball and struck it into the left side of the net.
After threatening to score several times, BG increased the lead to four goals at the 36:41 mark. Tilford, who had narrowly missed on several scoring chances, broke free and fired a shot that Withrow was able to stop. The rebound, however, went to an opportunistic McDonald on the left side of the goalmouth, and the freshman tapped it into the net for a 4-0 halftime lead.
Anderson, who had scored a goal early in the first half, struck even more quickly in the second stanza. Wentzel played a right-side crossing ball to Anderson, who converted with a diving header. The goal came just 29 seconds into the half.
Another right-side cross by Wentzel led to the final goal of the day, this time coming from the head of Meister. The senior's fourth goal of the season completed the scoring at the 59:25 juncture.
All 20 BGSU players in uniform saw action in the match.
"I am very pleased with our performance today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "There were a lot of positives that came out of this game.
"We received a good amount of scoring from a lot of different people, we made sure we maintained the shutout, and everyone who is healthy got a good amount of minutes and an opportunity to show what they can do. In particular, the players who haven't played a lot prior to today got a chance to show what they can offer the team for the rest of the season.
"We got everything that I could have hoped we might get out of today's game. We got the win, we did not have any injuries, and we got a good boost of confidence as we head into a tough road game at Indiana."
The Falcons outshot the Vikings by a 22-3 count, including an 11-2 margin in shots on goal. Senior Ali Shingler and freshman Christy Zabek combined on the shutout for the Brown and Orange, each playing 45 minutes of the win. Shingler made a pair of stops, while Zabek, in her collegiate debut, was not called upon to make a save.
Withrow made three saves in 74-plus minutes for the Vikings, while Melisa Mazanec had two saves in working a scoreless 15:36.
The Falcons return to action Sunday (Sept. 18), beginning a five-match road swing with a contest at Indiana University. That closes the non-conference portion of the season for the Brown and Orange.
