Bowling Green, Ohio - For the second straight game, the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team nearly rallied from a double-digit deficit but a veteran Furman team held off the Falcons 63-59 Sunday at Anderson Arena.
Trailing 55-43 with 7:47 to go, the Falcons scored the next 10 points, including four by sophomore Erik Marschall and four by senior Martin Samarco to cut the lead to 55-53 with 4:16 to go.
After an Erik Marschall blocked shot on Furman's Robby Bostain, the Falcons went down the floor to tie the game, but Samarco was called for charging.
Bostain would hit a jumper with 3:45 left, but a pair of free throws by Samarco and an offensive rebound and layup by Marschall would tie the score for the first time since the opening tip.
Bostain hit a free throw to give the Paladins, 2-1, a 58-57 advantage, but BGSU could not capitalize on two trips down the floor which ended with a turnover by junior Ryne Hamblet on the first try and then his three-point shot on the next trip was off the mark with 20 seconds to go.
Furman's Eric Webb hit a pair of free throws to make it 60-57, and Samarco hit a jumper with eight seconds left and was fouled with a chance to tie the score. His free throw attempts rimmed out and Gerad Punch nailed two charity tosses with second seconds to go.
The Falcons came down the floor, but Furman fouled Hamblet before they could get off a potential tying three-point shot. He missed the first one and had to miss the second one on purpose and Furman got the rebound and added a free throw by Alec Opacic for the final score.
Furman led from the start and built a 21-10 advantage with 6:00 to go. The Falcons cut it to 24-20 with 1:37 before halftime, but a steal and layup by George Brozos upped the lead to six and a three-pointer by Webb at the buzzer gave Furman a 29-20 halftime advantage.
The Falcons will host South Alabama, Saturday, November 25 at 2 p.m.
