OXFORD, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Freshman Katie Stephenson scored her first collegiate goal in the second overtime, giving the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team a 1-0 win at Miami University Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Miami Soccer Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-9-1 on the season and 3-5-0 in MAC action. The RedHawks drop to 5-7-3 and 3-4-1, respectively.
"This was a terrific result for us today, and one that we thoroughly deserved," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I am very proud of the team's efforts, not just today, but over the weekend.
"We played two very good teams on the road to double overtime. As hearbreaking as the result was Friday [a 3-2 loss at Ball State], that is how wonderful the feeling was to get the overtime winner today."
Sophomore Colleen Kordan was credited with the assist on Stephenson's goal, while redshirt freshman Alexa Arsenault earned the shutout with four saves in 101-plus minutes.
The Falcons had a season-high 27 shots in Sunday's game, to Miami's total of 14. BGSU had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal in the match.
Arsenault, as mentioned, made a total of four saves in the match, including three in the second half, to pick up the win. She improves her record to 3-3-1 on the on the year, and drops her goals-against average to 0.99.
Krista Pace made 10 saves for the RedHawks.

"I was thrilled for Katie Stephenson to get the winning goal. Katie only played about 14 minutes in the game, but it just shows that you don't have to play the entire match to make a contribution. She gave us exactly what we are looking for -- maximum effort and maximum quality every time you are on the field.
"We are very happy with this win, and we know we have given ourselves an opportunity. But, we also know that we need to pick up some more wins before the end of the season."
The Falcons will return home for a pair of matches next weekend, beginning with a Friday (Oct. 26) game vs. Ohio. Kickoff for that match is 4:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
