NASHVILLE - Freshman guard Lauren Prochaska scored a game-high 20 points as the Bowling Green State University Falcons beat the Lipscomb University Lady Bisons, 54-42, on Thursday (Nov.15) night at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn. Bowling Green now improves to a perfect 2-0 on the season while LU drops to 1-3 overall.
In her young career with the Orange and Brown, Prochaska has seen career high nights with 19 and 20 points, respectively. Currently, she is the only Falcon to repeat back-to-back outings with such figures.
Bowling Green jumped ahead of LU early hitting five of their first eight shot attempts from the field en route to building an eventual 17-4 lead on the Lady Bisons 14-and-a-half minutes into the game, but would go on to not successfully convert another shot for almost seven full minutes of play.
Senior Kate Achter finally solved BG's scoring problems as she netted one from behind the arc over a Lipscomb defender. The much needed trey was just the third of Achter's career with the Falcons. She continued to help the Falcons swing the stagnant momentum back into their favor with a diving steal at mid-court where she was on the receiving end of an LU foul. The tri-captain then added the two free points toward the BGSU lead and the Falcons found themselves ahead by 14 with some of the first half to still be played.
During the scoreless time span, BGSU missed 11 consecutive field-goals; but they were not the only ones feeling an invisible cap had been placed over the rims.
Lipscomb also had problems scoring throughout the first half. At the 17:40 mark, Catie Woods knocked down a three-point field-goal to put LU within three points of the Falcons, but the Lady Bisons did not see their next made field-goal until Tiffany Arnold's jumper at 14:17. In fact, LU was held to less than 10 total team points for the first 13-plus minutes of the contest.
Cree Nix propelled the Lady Bisons past the single digit hump with a pair of back-to-back lay-ups from the same block on the left side of the court. One score came from a set offensive piece while the other was the product of an LU inbounds pass.
Lipscomb's final five field-goals of the first-half were all from the left side of the floor; four of those five shots were close range jumpers from the same low block.
The Lady Bisons kept pace with the Falcons and lowered the visitors' advantage to as little as eight points on two occasions in the closing minutes first-half including a 29-21 score at the intermission.
The familiar combination of Prochaska and Lindsey Goldsberry gave the Falcons their final double-digit lead of the night as BG scored on its first two possessions of the new half while LU began with a pair of turnovers. They would go on to commit 27 before the final buzzer giving rise to 23 BG points.
Although LU chipped away at the Falcons' lead, they were unable to shorten it to less than 10 points and were down as many as 15 twice in the latter half of the competition.
Through 40 minutes of play, BGSU survived a 32.2 percent (19-of-59) shooting night; the first of its kind since going 16-of-55 (.291) against Duke early last December. LU, on the other hand, made 13-of-49 attempts from the floor and finished the night converting just 26.5 percent of their tries.
Despite the rough shooting night for the Falcons, Achter tossed in 14 points while four additional Falcons scored at least a pair of points in the win.
Speaking of the point totals, the 54 Falcon points are not only the fewest points scored in a non-conference win under head coach Curt Miller, but are also the fewest points scored in any win during the Miller era (2001-present). In the past seven seasons, BGSU has won three games with as little as 57 points scored in Mid-American Conference play. In 2002, BG beat Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, 57-56, while in 2004 they beat rival Toledo in their own arena, 57-54. Most recently, BGSU beat Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Mich., 57-52.
Also of note from the scoreboard, the last time the Falcons held an opponent under 50 points was at the University at Buffalo on Feb. 17, 2007. The Bulls scored just 44 points on their home court as the Falcons took the MAC road match, 85-44. Since Miller took over the Falcons, BGSU has held their opponent at, or below, the half century mark a total of 24 times and are 23-1 when doing so.
The Falcons, who will remain in Tennessee, have Belmont on the horizon next. BGSU and Belmont will tip-off in Nashville at 4:00 CST on Sunday afternoon.
