BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University hockey coach Scott Paluch and freshman forward Jacob Cepis shared their thoughts with the media following Friday night's 4-2 win over top-ranked Miami. The win was the Falcons first over the nation's No.1 team since Nov. 6, 1993 when the Falcons beat, then, top-ranked Lake Superior State, 3-2, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
BG Head Coach Scott Paluch
On his mood following the game
"This win feels real good. We've been in a stretch here where we'ver played a lot of good hockey teams and played well, but we haven't got the wins. We took a lot of time this week to talk about that. We needed to do a lot of things well, and confidence-wise, it's real big for our program to get a win like that."
On the play of Jimmy Spratt
"Jimmy was really good all the way through the game. Probably, the most important part of what Jimmy did was after the goal to make it 4-2, we saw three really good saves out of him. That's ultimately what you want your goaltender to do, and he did it."
Did you see some vulnerability in their transition game leading into tonight?
"That [the transition game] is a part of our team, which is something that really need to have. We feel we have a real quick team and we preach to them that as soon as they can break a play they need to use that speed in the transition game to make things happen. If we get our feet moving, we can really use that quickness to our advantage and get some good scoring chances. You saw that tonight with both of Cepis' goals where the guys were quick in their transitions and made plays - even in some of the chances where we didn't score tonight, we were quick in our transitions."
On the play of Jacob Cepis
"He was very confident tonight and was pretty crafty and it was a good sign seeing him get that first goal right away tonight. He's a goal scorer. He scored a lot of goals in junior hockey for a reason and part of it is he has a good stick, a quick release on his shot and there is a pretty good chance that puck is going where he wants it to go."
Freshman Forward Jacob Cepis
On getting a signature win after so many close calls
"The last couple of games, we've been giving up leads. We came in tonight with the goal of playing 60 minutes. We haven't been playing 60 minutes. Tonight, we didn't give up the lead like we have some other games. We didn't let up. We didn't go into that prevent. We attacked. We attacked on the penalty kill, everyone was trying to score and get chances. When you keep the pressure up on teams like that, it just makes it harder for them to come back and how great is that [the win]? We just beat the number one team in the country. How many people can say that?
On the play of Jimmy Spratt
"I'm so happy for the guy. We've had some tough games where we've given up goals in the third period. He hung in there today - even through the penalties -- he played a heck of a game."
On the expectations for tomorrow
"They'll [the RedHawks] be coming out pretty hard tomorrow after this game tonight. They're the number one team for a reason and they don't like to lose, so I'm expecting them to come out 10 times as hard tomorrow as they did tonight."
How important was the transition game tonight for you guys?
"Well coach [Paluch] had talked to us coming in about their all-out attack. They're a run-and-gun team and they attack you at all times. Even on the penalty-kill they are out there trying to get a short-handed goal. The transition game was just a big part of the game tonight and we were doing well with it. We were hustling and just beating them to pucks tonight."
