BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Fans of Bowling Green State University will get their first official look at the swimming and diving team this weekend as the Falcons open the Mid-American Conference season entertaining the Eastern Michigan Eagles Friday, Oct. 31 at 5:00 p.m., and the Ball State Cardinals, Saturday Nov. 1, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cooper Pool.
The EMU Eagles will also be opening their season in this weekend's meet at Cooper Pool. Going into the season the Eagles were picked to finish fourth, one place ahead of the Falcons who were selected to tie for fifth with the University at Buffalo in the preseason poll put out by the MAC office, released Thursday, October 23. Last year the Eagles defeated the Falcons on November 2, 2007, with a score of 154-134.
In that same poll, the BSU Cardinals were chosen to finish eighth in the MAC. The Cardinals finished second out of six teams in the Dennis Stark Relays Friday, Oct. 3, and second of four teams in the Indiana Intercollegiate meet on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Cardinals will be swimming against the University of Toledo the night before (October 31). The previous meet between the Falcons and the Cardinals on November 3, 2007, the Cardinals swam victoriously, beating the Falcons 193-107.
The BGSU Falcons will return eight swimmers, seven of which were responsible for five school records and one MAC record, while bringing to the team 12 freshmen.
"We couldn't be more excited about the upcoming season," said head coach Keri Buff. "We are a very young squad with a lot of talent. What we will need this year is for our upper classmen to be leaders and our freshman to follow their lead with hard work and confidence. We are looking forward to this year being one of the best in BGSU history."
