CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University sophomore Katie Stephenson has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Team for 2008, the league office announced Wednesday (Nov. 26). Stephenson earns the honor for the first time, in her first year of eligibility.
Stephenson, a finance major, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average to date. Just under a month ago, she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.
Stephenson, who hails from Lexington, Ohio (Lexington HS), played in all 22 games this fall, making 19 starts. She scored eight points to tie for fifth on the team.
Stephenson had goals in wins against Marshall (Sept. 14), Xavier (Sept. 21) and Western Michigan (Sept. 28), with the latter goal proving to be the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph in Kalamazoo. Stephenson assisted on the winning goals vs. UDM and Ball State (Oct. 10), with the helper in the BSU game coming in overtime.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards finished with an overall record of 12-6-4 and a MAC ledger of 6-3-2. BGSU placed fourth in the final MAC standings, and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
A total of 18 student-athletes were named to this year's team. The amount of honorees is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The remaining student-athletes were recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections. For the Falcons, that group includes seniors Brianne Eisenhard, Kristin McDonald and Gina Rossi, juniors Jen Czapka, Kaitlyn Kobe and Stacey Lucas, and sophomores Alicia Almond and Jackie Tamerlano.
The Academic All-MAC Team is listed below. Among the Academic All-MAC Team members, Stephenson is the only student-athlete among the 18 honorees who maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA.
