Falcons Finish 11th at MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The 2008 Mid-American Conference Championships are in the books with the Bowling Green State University women's track and field team finishing 11th with 29 points on the weekend. The three-day event took place on the newly constructed Whittaker Track on the campus of BGSU.
Akron won the Championship with 208.5 points. They were followed by Western Michigan (153), Miami (73.5), Kent State (73), Central Michigan (64), Buffalo (50.5), Ohio (43), Toledo (35.5), Eastern Michigan (35), Ball State (35), Bowling Green (29) and Northern Illinois (18).
Akron also won the men's championship by the slimmest of margins, capturing the event with 183 points. Eastern Michigan finished second with 182 points and were followed by Kent State (153), Miami (129.5), Central Michigan (85.5) and Buffalo (79).
On the final day of competition the Orange and Brown received their best performance of the day from Carly Bates. The sophomore from Palatine, Ill., finished fourth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:45.84, just three seconds behind the leader.
The Falcons also received two points in the 4x100 race in which the Falcons finished seventh with a time of 47.93. On that relay team were Brittani McNeal, Sarah Hooten, Amanda Sefcik and Shantell Lewis.
On Friday, Dunning finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 48-11, a new season-best for the junior from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Sefcik jumped 18-07 in the long jump to finish fifth. The jump was the second best for the senior.
Springer finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:17.00, 11 seconds faster then her previous-best this season of 11:28 set two weeks ago at the Toledo Invitational. Springer's seventh place finish earned the Orange and Brown two points. Barbara Powers finished just out of the point column in the same event, finishing ninth with a time of 11:27.38, also a season-best.
On Thursday Whitney Hartman, finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 191-07 to score eight points for the Falcons. Her previous-best throw was 183-02 at the All-Ohio Championships earlier this season.
Senior Lauren Bryant also chipped in on the hammer throw, finishing eighth in the event with a toss of 166-00, scoring one point for the Orange and Brown.
In the final women's event for the night, Kara Butler scored two points in the 10,000-meter race, finishing seventh with a time of 37:01.36, her best time of the season.
As mentioned, Akron swept the team titles, winning the women's meet by over 50 points. On the men's side, the Zips' championship was not clinched until the final event, the 4x400-meter relay. Eastern Michigan's foursome won that race, but UA made up some ground on the final lap to finish third and capture the conference title.
