BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team exploded for four second-half goals en route to a 4-0 win over the University of Detroit Mercy Friday afternoon (Sept. 19). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-2-2 on the season, and BGSU's unbeaten streak is now five games. The Titans drop to 2-4-1.
Freshman Katelyn Turner scored what would prove to be the winning goal off a corner kick early in the second half, and classmate Leah Johnson and senior Kristin McDonald also scored goals for the Falcons. BG's second goal of the day was an own goal.
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made one save to earn the Falcons' third consecutive shutout. Joanna Hinde had five saves for the Titans.
All four of BGSU's goals came in the game's final 40 minutes, with the last three coming in the final 19 minutes of the game. The Falcons had a commanding 18-3 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 margin in shots on goal.
While the Falcons lit up the scoreboard in the late going, it was the Titans who very nearly got on the board in the game's second minute. With just 1:09 elapsed, UDM's Nicole Gipson headed a cross toward goal. The soft shot hit the far (left) post and bounded away.
BG's first shot of the day came off the foot of freshman Megan Amann. She headed down the left side of the field, and tried to beat Hinde with a shot toward the lower-left corner. But, the UDM 'keeper was able to get a hand on the ball and deflect it out of bounds.
At the other end, Arsenault broke up a cross by Emily Kiely, then was able to stop Kiely's shot several minutes later. The latter play came after Kiely had made a long run through traffic and fired a shot. The ball was deflected, but Arsenault was able to make the adjustment and come up with the save.
Late in the first half, BG's Turner made a run down the center of the field, and played a ball out to junior Stacey Lucas swooping in from the left wing. Lucas uncorked a hard shot, but it was right at Hinde, and the game remained scoreless.
Early in the second half, however, the Falcons had several chances within a three-minute span. With just under three minutes gone, fifth-year senior Gina Rossi's right-side cross found the 18-yard area, but neither Lucas nor sophomore Meagan Moran could get off a shot in traffic.
Just over a minute later, Moran's left-side corner kick somehow got past a flock of Falcons in the box, sailing untouched through the 'danger area.' But, the home team would convert on the next corner kick.
Sophomore Katie Stephenson took that kick, and the ball sailed high toward the goalmouth. Turner and Hinde battled for it, and the Falcon freshman headed the ball above the leaping 'keeper and into the upper netting, and BG had the lead.
The Falcons had a few more chances in the next few minutes. In fact, BGSU fired the first 11 shot attempts of the second half.
Junior Samantha Bland had a header that went just wide.
Moran sent Rossi down the right side, and Rossi's cross went to Stephenson, who fired wide.
Moran then put Turner into the box, looking for her second goal in a nine-minute span. Turner placed her shot on net, but Hinde was able to deflect the ball over the bar for a corner kick.
Off of that corner kick, Stephenson again had a shot attempt, and Bland put a shot on goal. Then, with exactly 19 minutes left, the Falcons doubled the lead, with a little bit of help.
Lucas, on the right side of the pitch, played a diagonal ball into the box. The cross deflected off of the head of a leaping UDM defender and into the net. The own goal gave the Brown and Orange a 2-0 lead, and the Falcons only increased the offensive pressure.
Junior Colleen Kordan unleashed a wicked half-volley off a pass from sophomore Jackie Tamerlano. Kordan's shot, taken from the right side of the box, whizzed just over the goal with 13 minutes left in the match.
After Tamerlano had a shot of her own with five-and-a-half minutes left, Johnson made a nice run down the right side of the field, and found junior Jen Czapka in the box. Johnson's cross found the foot of the lunging Czapka, who volleyed it on the fly. Hinde was powerless to stop the shot, but the ball sailed just inches over the bar.
With less than three minutes remaining, Johnson fired a hard shot that Hinde misplayed, resulting in a three-goal Falcon lead. Just 51 seconds later, the Falcons scored again, on a nifty 3-on-2 attack.
Czapka, in the center of the field, had McDonald on her left and senior Corbie Yee on her right. Czapka took the ball toward the penalty area and slid a pass to Yee. Yee's right-to-left ball found McDonald moving left-to-right on the six-yard line, and McDonald's one-timer found nothing but net, closing the scoring.
BGSU's 18-3 shots advantage included a lopsided 14-1 total in the second half. Thirteen different Falcons had shot attempts in the match, with no player recording more than two.
"I think we saw the best and worst of the program in this game," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "The first half was extremely disappointing and frustrating. There was a lack of energy and thought in our overall play, and we were very fortunate to be tied at halftime.
"However, the second half was a much better performance. We talked to the team at halftime about getting back to basics and doing the simple things, and we definitely saw a change in those areas. Also, the players who came off the bench deserve huge credit today. Two of the goals were scored by players (McDonald and Turner) who came off the bench, and Stacey Lucas set up the own goal.
"Additionally, Kaitlyn Kobe did a terrific job. She added a whole new attacking element to our play when she came on. I think our bench players, and our depth, were the difference. Every single player in the program plays a part in our success, and those people who came off the bench today really turned the game around.
"We played a great second half, and that last goal was the pick of the bunch. That goal is something we worked on in practice, and it was a beautiful goal. We look to continue the momentum of that second half as we head into Sunday's match."
The Falcons will head to Cincinnati to close the non-conference portion of the schedule, taking on Xavier University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21). Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. in the Queen City.

* The last goal surrendered by the Falcon defense came on Sept. 7 at Ohio State ... BGSU has not allowed a goal in a span of 322:46, the fifth-longest streak in school history ... the school record is 445:03, set in October of 2005.
* The Falcons have five shutouts in this season's eight games to date ... Arsenault has three complete-game shutouts, and has combined with Zabek for the other two.
* Freshman Leah Johnson scored the first goal of her collegiate career ... Johnson becomes the 13th different Falcon to score a goal this season to date.

* Freshman Katelyn Turner's goal vs. Detroit was the second of her brief career, and was her first game-winning goal as a Falcon.
* Prior to the IPFW game (Sept. 5), the Falcons had not scored more than three goals in a match since the 2005 season ... over the last five games, though, BGSU has averaged 3.80 goals per game.
* BGSU is now 34-1-1 in the last 36 games in which the Falcons have scored first.
FALCON FUTBOL NOTES (also titled, "BG's Success Transcends Gender")

* In September matches at Cochrane Field, BGSU teams are 4-0-0 and have outscored the opposition, 16-0.
