COLUMBUS, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Senior co-captain Brianne Eisenhard scored in the 74th minute, helping the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 1-1, double-overtime tie against The Ohio State University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7). The non-conference contest was held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The tie gives the Falcons a record of 1-2-2 on the season, while the Buckeyes are now 0-2-2.
Fifth-year senior Gina Rossi, a native of nearby Powell, Ohio, picked up the assist on Eisenhard's goal.
Ashley Bowyer had given the Buckeyes a one-nil lead on a free kick at the 57:14 mark, before Eisenhard's equalizer with 73:16 gone.
The hosts held a 23-14 margin in shot attempts, and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. BGSU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault made six saves in her 110 minutes of work, while her OSU counterpart, Lauren Robertson, also played the entire game and made two stops.
Ohio State outshot the Falcons by a 14-4 margin in the second half. BGSU had seven shot attempts in the two overtime periods, including five in the first 10-minute OT session.
"As a team, we defended very well in the first 20-25 minutes to survive the onslaught of the home team," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Once we survived that, we actually played very well. In fact, the longer the game went, the better we played. In double overtime, we looked like the stronger, fitter, more energetic team.
"Ohio State's goal came off of a free kick. While we are never happy to allow a goal, we are pleased that the only goal we conceded this weekend was not from scrimmage play. The team responded well after falling behind, and Captain Eisenhard scored from an area where she is lethal, after a good cross from Stacey Lucas and a header from Gina Rossi had created chaos in the Buckeye six-yard box.
"It was a very good performance again today. The team is improving by leaps and bounds, and we hope that as we continue to test ourselves, we will continue to see some good improvements."
The Falcons now return home for the next three matches, beginning with a Friday (Sept. 12) game vs. Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
