BG Hockey Controversy Settled; Falcons Earn Shootout Win and Points
October 31, 2009 | Ice Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. - After a night of controversy and question, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association has confirmed the result of Friday night's game. Bowling Green defeated Nebraska Omaha in a shootout but there was debate about whether or not one of the Falcon players should have been allowed to participate in the shootout. The CCHA has now determined that the original verdict of the game's result will not be altered and BGSU will be credited with the shootout win and two points in the league standings, while UNO will receive a single point for an overtime tie.
Bowling Green interim head coach Dennis Williams was informed of the confirmation earlier today. The conference is set to make an official release available some time today.
The debate began when Bowling Green's Jordan Samuels-Thomas was penalized for roughing, contact after the whistle, with 16 seconds left in the overtime period and then represented the Falcons during the second round of the BG-UNO shootout. Samuels-Thomas scored on his trip to center ice and was the only player to score between the two teams in the shootout frame. His eventual game-winning shootout tally was then questioned due to an NCAA shootout rule stating that no player serving a penalty at the end of overtime can participate in any shootout to determine point distribution.
With such confirmation, the CCHA scores Friday night's game as a 4-3 BGSU shootout win but is recognized by the NCAA as a 3-3 tie. The Falcons now stand at 0-4-1 overall and have a 0-0-1-1 record in conference play.
The Falcons and the Mavericks will finish the season series tonight at 8:05 p.m. CST at Qwest Center Omaha. Visit BGSUFALCONS.com for complete coverage of the series finale.
