Falcons Fall Short to Bulls

Waller, Rom and Yu set season-best times
Buffalo, New York—After battling the Buffalo Bulls in their second-to-last dual meet of the 2009-10 season, BGSU came up just short as the Bulls defeated the Falcons 154-114. With this loss, the Falcons record falls to 1-5. Despite the loss, the Falcons finished in the top three eighteen times, took first on three separate occasions and had three individuals swim best times on the season.
In a second place finish, freshman Emily Waller swam a personal best time in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Waller swam the 66-lap race in 17:46.67, giving her the 17th fastest time in the Mid-American Conference, to-date. Later in the meet, Waller also took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and swam the third-leg of the Falcon relay that took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Sophomore Amanda Rom finished in the top spot en route to swimming a season-best time in the 200-yard breaststroke. Rom finished in first with a time of 2:23.23, ranking her eighth in the MAC this season. Rom also finished in fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.67. Rom currently has the second-fastest time in BGSU school history in the 200 breaststroke and holds the top time in the 100 breaststroke.
Teammate Vicky Yu swam her season-best time in the 400 IM, finishing in third with a time of 4:38.62. Her final time in tonight's race is strong enough a time to rank her 15th fastest in the MAC this season. She currently holds the BGSU school record in this event as well as the record in the 200-yard butterfly. Also in tonight's meet against the Bulls, Yu took first in the 200 fly (2:05.95) and second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.98).
The Falcons final first-place swim came in the last relay event of the meet which proved to be a nail-bitter for the Orange and Brown squad. Meg Richardson, Emily Bennet, Waller and Sarah Reinink stole the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching in at 3:33.44, only one one-hundredth of a second ahead of the Buffalo squad that finished behind them (3:33.45). The Falcons top time in this event is their third fastest of the season.
Freshman Emily Bennet also had a strong performance at tonight's meet as she finished in second place twice and in third once. Bennet took second in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, touching in at 24.63 and 53.24, respectively. Bennet's third-place finish came during the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.12).
Also adding points to the Falcon scoreboard were senior Meg Richardson and freshmen Jamie Akenberger and Alexis Kain.
Richardson took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.45), third in the 50 free (24.86) and fourth in the 100 free (53.73). She was also a member of the top-placing 400-yard freestyle relay squad. Akenberger, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio, swam to a second and a third place finish in each of the backstroke events. She took second in the 200 back (2:07.02) and third in the 100 (1:00.13). Akenberger's time in the 100 back was just two-tenths of a second off of the second-place finishing Bull time. Last but certainly not least, Alexis Kain posted two third-place times in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Kain came in at 1:07.39 and 2:27.63, respectively.
Akenberger and Kain, along with Sarah Burston and Carrie Enright made up the Falcon relay team that took third in the 400 free relay.
The Falcons will round out the 2009-10 regular season next weekend, February 5, when they travel to Akron, Ohio, to face off against the Akron Zips at 5:00 p.m.
