Falcons Head to Western New York to Brave the Bulls
January 28, 2010 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Bowling Green, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University women's swim team will head to Buffalo, New York where they will face off against the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday, Jan. 30, for their second to last dual meet of the season.
The Falcons, 1-4 in the MAC, will be looking for their first road win of the season at Alumni Arena Natatorium. Despite their most recent loss to the Toledo Rockets, two Orange and Brown relays posted times that are the second fastest of the 2009-10 season for the team.
Scouting the Bulls
So far this season, the Buffalo Bulls (6-2 overall; 3-2 MAC) have defeated three MAC foes, including the Eastern Michigan Eagles, the Ball State Cardinals and, most recently, the Akron Zips, but have struggled against the Miami Redhawks and the Ohio Bobcats, a team that BGSU defeated back in November.
At the 2009 MAC Championships, the Bulls finished one spot, and only 30 points, ahead of the Falcons for a sixth place finish with 335.5 points.
Standing out in the MAC
Although the Falcon's record on the season might not be the best at first glance, a number of Falcon swimmers have posted some of the fastest times in the MAC this season. So far, 12 Falcon swimmers have posted times in 15 out of 16 individual events that rank among the top 20 in the conference. Of those 12, eight have posted times that rank among the top ten in 12 of the 16 individual events.
Captain Meg Richardson currently holds the number one fastest time in the MAC in the 100-yard freestyle as well as the second fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle and the third fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle. Likewise, junior Sarah Burston currently holds the second fastest time in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM as well as the sixth fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly.
Veteran swimmers are not the only ones posting top times in the conference as all five freshmen on the Orange and Brown team have posted times that rank among the top 20. Emily Waller has the second fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke as well as the 18th time in the 500-yard freestyle. Teammate Alexa Harris ranks third and eleventh in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, respectively. Emily Bennet holds the tenth fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle and the seventh fastest times in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. Alexis Kain ranks fifth and 13th in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, respectively; and last, but certainly not least, Jamie Akenberger posted the 12th fastest time in the 200-yard back.
In relay events, 15 Falcon squads have posted times that rank in the top 20 in each of the five relay races. Of those 15, nine rank among the top ten fastest times in the conference.
