Matsumoto Receives NHL Call Up From ‘Canes

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Former Bowling Green forward Jonathan Matsumoto was called up to the National Hockey League ranks with the Carolina Hurricanes, this afternoon.
Matsumoto played for the Falcons from 2004 to 2007 and recorded a career line of 49-64-113 over that time. As a freshman in 2004-05 when he lead the team in scoring, being just the third BGSU freshmen to do so by scoring 18 goals and recording 14 assists (32 points).He saved his career year for his sophomore campaign when he posted 20 goals and 28 assists (48 points) in 2005-06.
He left Bowling Green after his junior season to pursue a professional career. He was drafted in the third round (79th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. After leaving Bowling Green, he scored two goals and two assists in just 12 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL).
Matsumoto played over 250 games with the Phantoms between their time in Philadelphia and Adirondack and scored 81 goals and 92 assists (173 points) for the team. In 16 playoff games, he recorded a 3-4-7 line. This season with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) he recorded three goals and six assists (nine points) in ten games.
He was traded to the Hurricanes during the 2010 offseason for a seventh round draft pick by Philadelphia.
Carolina's next action is set for Monday, Nov. 1 when the Hurricanes travel back to the place that sent them Matsumoto, Philadelphia, for a 7:00 p.m. EST start. The game will be aired on Fox Sports - Coastal Region.
Update (Nov. 2): In Matsumoto's NHL debut, he logged 5:15 of even-strength ice time with the Hurricanes in a 3-2 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers. He recorded one shot on goal and no points on the night. Click here for the game recap.
Update (Nov. 4): Matsumoto scored his first NHL goal on against the New York Islanders, Wednesday night (Nov. 3). He did not stop with just one score on the evening. He tallied two goals in nearly 11 minutes of ice time, scoring the second and final of seven Hurricanes goals in the game. He saw time both 5-on-5 and on the penalty kill unit.
