BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Despite out-hitting the Eastern Michigan Eagles 6-3 in an Easter Sunday showdown, the Bowling Green State University softball squad fell to the Mid-American Conference foes, 5-2.
EMU at BGSU Box Score, Game Two
In the loss, freshman Paige Berger smashed her seventh long ball of the season in a seventh inning effort to overcome the Eagles. Berger leads the team in homeruns on the season. Berger recorded two of BGSU's three hits on the game and scored both runs for the Falcon offense.
The Falcons record is now 6-12 overall, 2-2 MAC.
Although both teams got off to a slow start today (April 4)—the Eagles launched into action in the top of the third, adding three runs on two hits to the scoreboard. While BGSU was unable to answer those runs offensively, the Falcons held EMU to zero runs and zero hits in the fourth. The Eagles came back to life in the top of the fifth when they recorded their final two runs of the game, giving EMU a 0-5 lead on the Falcons.
BGSU answered back in the bottom of the fifth, posting two hits and adding one run to the scoreboard. Berger started the inning for the Falcons with a single up the middle. Karmen Coffey followed suit, also sending one up the middle, advancing Berger to second. With Susan Sontag at the plate, the Falcons were put in the perfect position to score as Berger ran to third on a wild pitch, followed by a stolen by Coffey.
Zada Lines was the next Falcon to bat and reached first on an error by EMU's shortstop, bringing home Berger for the Falcon's first run of the game.
With the Eagles unable to put anymore runs on the scoreboard, the Falcons, down 1-5, made a last inning effort to overcome EMU. Again, starting the inning off for the Falcons, Berger smashed a homer over the left field fence to give BGSU its second, but final run of the game.
The Falcon defense kept the Eagles scoreless in five out of seven innings. Zada Lines pitched for the Falcons all seven innings, giving up only three hits the entire game; Lines pitching record drops to 2-6.
With the first weekend of MAC competition under wraps, the Falcons hold even at 2-2. Senior Karmen
Coffey leads the team in batting average (.455), hits (5), on-base percentage (.500) and is one of five Falcons to remain perfect in the field in MAC play.
BGSU will be right back in action for a mid-week matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday, April 7 at Notre Dame. Game time is set to kick-off at 5:00 p.m.
