Brennan Smith was selected in the 33rd round by the Detroit Tigers today.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – After the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft concluded, Brennan Smith became the 27th Falcon drafted to the professional ranks since 1990. Smith was selected with the 1,003rd overall selection in the 33rd round by the Detroit Tigers earlier today.
“We're really excited for Brennan to be chosen by the Detroit Tigers,” said twentieth-year head coach, Danny Schmitz. “It is well deserved and he has earned the right to get the chance to compete professionally.”
The Sandusky, Ohio native finished the 2010 season as the Falcons' number-one starter with a 6-4 overall record and an 8.61 earned-run average in 16 starts. He led the team in total strikeouts with 70 on the season in 77.1 innings pitched. In Mid-American Conference play, Smith went 4-2 in nine starts with a 7.41 ERA with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.18:1, a dramatic improvement from the beginning of the season to season's end.
He ended 2010 winning two of his last three starts against Buffalo and in the first round of the MAC Tournament against Ball State. He allowed four runs and walked three in each contest but struck out a combined 11 batters and allowed only ten base hits in 13.2 total innings. He tied a career-high with ten strikeouts against Miami where he went 7.1 innings in a 14-8 win.

“I think Brennan is like Burke Badenhop when he was chosen by the Tigers in 2005,” commented Schmitz. “He could be a diamond in the rough with a fastball in the upper 80's that touches the low nineties, an outstanding breaking pitch as well as a change-up. When he is throwing strikes and keeping hitters off-balance, he is pretty darn good. We wish Brennan nothing but the best in his decision.”
The junior still has one year of eligibility left to play for the Falcons in 2011, if he chooses to return for next season. Smith is now the highest drafted Falcons since Nolan Reimold (second round) and Burke Badenhop (19th round) were drafted after the 2005 season. Last season, Derek Spencer was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 40th round and in 2006, pitcher Alan Brech was taken in the 35th round by the Cleveland Indians.
In 2009, Smith was named MAC Pitcher of the Year after finishing the season 8-4 overall with a 4.41 ERA. He struck out a MAC-best 80 hitters while walking only 31, seven of those out of conference. He registered six of his eight wins in conference play. He also led the league in starts (15), wins (8) and opposing batting average (.240).
