Evansville Sweeps Falcons At MSU Showcase

East Lansing, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost its second match at the MSU Showcase, losing to Evansville 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 Saturday morning. The Falcons will play one more match in the tournament, meeting IUPUI at 4:30 this afternoon.

Senior Noelle Spitler tied her career high with 12 kills and freshman Danielle Tonyan added 11 but the Falcons were hampered by attack errors throughout. Bowling Green had more kills than Evansville through the first two sets but had 20 attack errors to just six for the Purple Aces.

Tonyan was dominant in the opening set, picking up six of her kills during the frame, but the Falcons fell behind by as many as 11 points before rallying late. With BGSU trailing 19-9, Tonyan had five kills during a 6-2 Falcons' run that cut the deficit to six. Bowling Green cut the lead to five points on three more occasions but Evansville closed out the set with a block for the 25-19 win.

In the second set, Evansville used an 8-0 run early to take a 9-3 lead and the Purple Aces never looked back for the 25-17 win. Evansville never trailed in the third set, building a quick 9-4 lead and the Falcons got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

After recording just 14 digs in a season-opening loss to Michigan State Friday night, Bowling Green was much better defensively against Evansville, posting 46 digs. Freshmen Paige Penrod and Ashley Dunn had 12 each and junior Susie Isphording added five. Laura Avila and Sam Fish split time at setter, handing out 11 and 10 assists respectively.

Now 0-2, Bowling Green will face IUPUI to conclude the weekend. IUPUI lost to Evansville in three sets Friday night and is 0-1 before an early afternoon match with Michigan State.
