Huntsville, Ala. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team completed a sweep of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Saturday evening, giving the Falcons their third win of the season. Goals from freshman Ryan Carpenter, sophomores Camden Wojtala, and Andrew Wallace were more than enough for junior goaltender Andrew Hammond. Hammond stopped all 21 shots he faced, earning his third shutout of his career.
Bowling Green got on the board first, despite being outshot early once again. In an encore performance of last night, Brett Mohler stole the puck behind the net and fed Carpenter out in front of the Huntsville crease. Carpenter buried the shot, earning his team-leading third goal of the year. The goal marked his sixth point of the season, also a team best.
The Falcons would tally another special team's goal in the second period, this time on the power play. Sophomore Camden Wojtala buried his second goal of the season 13 minutes into the frame, with assists coming from freshman Dan DeSalvo and sophomore Chad Sumsion.
Bowling Green added their third goal of the night just 3:19 into the third period. Sophomore Andrew Wallace received a no-look pass across the slot from freshman defenseman Marcus Perrier. Wallace buried the shot for his first goal of the year, and the third of his career.
Sumsion also added an assist on the third Falcon goal, giving him two on the night. The points marked his first of the young season, and 11 for his career.
Hammond's numbers have been outstanding so far in the young season. He has played in every game for the Falcons, going 3-0-1 on the year. His goals against average for the year currently sits at 1.47, while his save percentage sits at .931.
The win puts the Falcons record at 3-0-1, marking their best start since the 96-97 campaign. That year, Bowling Green opened the year with five straight victories, including wins against Ohio State, Boston College(two wins), and Lake Superior State (two wins). The 96-97 team would finish with a record of 17-16-5, good enough for fifth place in the CCHA.
The Falcons are back in action this Friday (Oct. 21) on the road against Lake Superior State. The Falcons were 1-1-2-2 against the Lakers last season, including two shootout losses in the early part of the year.
