BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team fell to nationally-ranked Notre Dame Friday night by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Bryce Williamson scored the only goal for the Falcons, while junior Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 25 shots in the loss.
Despite strong defensive play in the opening period from both teams, Notre Dame lit the lamp first on a power play goal from sophomore Anders Lee. The Minnesota native slammed home his league-leading ninth goal of the season, after senior Billy Maday found him alone on the side of the cage.
The Irish struck again in the early part of the second period on a wrist shot from freshman Garret Peterson. The goal marked Peterson's first career goal, and increased the Notre Dame lead to two.
The Falcons responded at the 12:13 mark of the second period, when sophomore Bryce Williamson skated into the offensive zone and fired a laser past Notre Dame goaltender Mike Johnson. The goal marked Williamson's third of the season, and eighth of his career. The goal put the score at 2-1 heading into the second intermission, with Notre Dame leading 14-10 in shots.
Notre Dame iced the game at 14:11 in the third period, when freshman Robbie Russo scored on a shot from the point, to make it 3-1 in favor of the Irish.
Freshman Ryan Carpenter's assist on the lone BG goal gives him seven points on the season, giving him a share for the team lead in points with sophomore Camden Wojtala.
The loss puts Bowling Green's record at 4-2-2 overall, with a record of 1-2-0 in league play. The Irish win improves their record to 3-3-0 overall, and 2-1-0 in league play.
