BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team opened the 2011-2012 season at the BGSU Ice Arena Friday evening with a 2-1 win over the University of Connecticut.
The Bowling Green victory came thanks in large part to strong special teams play, and solid goaltending throughout the contest. The Falcons junior goaltender Andrew Hammond allowed just one goal on 21 shots, including eight saves while on the penalty kill.
Similar to the exhibition game last weekend, the Falcons came out flying in the first period. A boarding penalty just 2:46 into the game gave Bowling Green their second power play chance of the night. Hard work below the hash marks allowed sophomore Camden Wojtala to get space and send the puck on goal. Freshman Ryan Carpenter was waiting in front of the Huskies net minder, and slammed home the first goal of the 2011-2012 season.
The Falcons continued to pressure UConn throughout the first frame, drawing another penalty with five minutes left in the period. More hard work set up another Falcon goal, as sophomore Bryce Williamson scored on a pass in the slot from Carpenter down low. Going into the first intermission, Bowling Green led 2-0 after outshooting UConn 12-3 in the period.
The Huskies would answer back with a power pay goal of their own just 3:45 into the second period. Sophomore Brant Harris carried the puck through the neutral zone and around the Bowling Green defenders before slipping a goal past Hammond on the low blocker side.
The Bowling Green lead was cut to one, but the Huskies could not solve Hammond again. Hammond stood tall stopping 17 shots in the final two frames, securing the 2-1 win and the first victory of the season.
The Falcons held UConn to one goal on 10 power play chances while converting two of their own eight opportunities.
Carpenter's goal and assist are the first of his collegiate career, and mark the first time a freshman has scored in a seasoning opening game since Kevin Schmidt back in 2005-06.
The win puts Bowling Green's all-time record against UConn at 3-0, including another season opening win back in 2006. The Falcons look to sweep the opening series against the Huskies tonight, with game two starting at 7:05 p.m.
