Two Commit To Falcon Baseball
December 12, 2011 | Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball program of head coach Danny Schmitz has announced the commitment of two student-athletes for the 2013 season. Brett Fitzwater, a left-handed pitcher from Fairview High School (Sherwood, Ohio) and Jacob Miller, a right-handed pitcher from Westerville North High School (Westerville, Ohio), have both committed to join the Falcons in 2013.
Fitzwater, standing at 6-4, 165 pounds, will come to Bowling Green from Fairview High School, where he compiled a 4-1 record as a junior. Fitzwater only allowed four earned runs on the year in 29.2 innings pitched, good for a 0.94 ERA. He also struck out 44 batters. On top of baseball, Fitzwater has lettered in golf and basketball. Fitzwater was named academic all-Ohio for golf this past season, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Danny Schmitz on Fitzwater: “Brett addresses one of our biggest needs for the 2013 class, left-handed pitching. We lose Matt (Malewitz) and Patrick (Martin), so he will fill a need. I saw Brett at our fall prospect camp; he is tall and lanky, with a loose arm. His fastball is in the mid to upper-80s, and his ceiling is very high. Brett competes very well, and we are excited for him to join our Falcon family next season.”
Pitching coach Rick Blanc on Fitzwater: “Brett does a good job of pounding the zone with all of his pitches. He has a good curveball to compliment his very good fastball. His ball has a lot of movement on it, which provides him with tremendous upside. Fitzwater will come in and have a chance to compete for a spot right away next season.”
Miller, who comes to Bowling Green from Westerville North High School, is a right-handed pitcher. He stands at 6-0, weighing 175 pounds. He will be a four-year letter winner after this season, and was named all-OCC honorable mention last season.
Miller has pitched over 40 innings in each of his three years as a varsity pitcher, while compiling a 2.92 ERA last season. As a freshman, Miller had a record of 5-2, and last season compiled a 3-3 record. He has struck out at least 30 batters in every varsity season thus far. The past two summers, Miller has been a member of one of the top travel programs around, competing with the Ohio Elite during the summer travel season.
Pitching coach Rick Blanc on Miller: “Jake is a righty, with good run on his fastball. His curveball has good depth, and he pounds the zone with all of his pitches. He is deceptive, and gives hitters different looks. He is a good competitor, and will come in and have a chance to compete for a spot right away.
